Hoping someone has some good advice for my situation. Here's what I know. 2004 RXP was winterized by SeaDoo dealer 2 summers ago and sat in storage last summer. It has around 200 hours. The gas tank was full of ethanol free gas and additionally treated with stabil in both the 1st storage season and 2nd storage season. It was put in the water this summer, driven around slowly to loosen up and warm up. Fired up well and drove well, didn't see any issues. Didn't take it up to full speed. Drove about a quarter tank and has 2 people on it at half speed when error beep occurred and the machine powered down. It was throwing low oil error code and smoking. I wasn't on it at the time so the 2 people limped it at idle back about 5 or so miles and it was trailered to dealership when I found the dipstick to have low oil. Dealer says there was very little oil in hull (thus the smoking, it likely burned it all up), and replaced oil filter housing thinking that was the cause. He fired it up and it ran rough so he did a compression check. Cylinder 2 threw 30 pounds so he put in a bore (snake?) and found the piston blew and wall was damaged/melted. He says engine it totaled.

2 questions - Anyone know the likely cause, if there was one? I am not mechanically trained. It's a 14 year old machine with decent hours, but obviously driven at high speeds/rpm in fresh water.

And what to do now? The value in good condition is just over $3K. Dealer says SeaDoo no longer makes the 04 RXP engine but SeaDoo does have manufacturer rebuilds with a warranty. Total price with labor is $5500. The local dealer rebuild price is $4400. Or they can give me a small amount for parts and I can trade in for a new model. I don't like the idea of spending more than it's worth, and definitely don't like the idea of buying a new one (around $15K). Guess another option is to try insurance and see what they say. Also I could just put it on craigslist/ebay for parts. Usually the supercharger is what goes first.
What's everyone's thoughts/experiences/recommendations?

Thanks!

If the engine is shot as they say that is going to be tough. There is no reason to put $4K into a ski that is only worth $4K.

At that point you are better off cutting your losses and moving on.

Agreed. What's a reasonable amount to sell it for on craigslist for parts? And what's reasonable for the dealer to offer?

Part it out yourself and sell the parts on Ebay. ECU, MPEM, Information Center, Super Charger, etc will all go quickly, and there's close to $1K in parts right there.

--I'm currently considering other sources as a 2nd opinion.

--I don't have any engine training, so not confident in taking the parts out.
