rope wrapped around impeller shaft

I sucked up some rope this weekend and wanted to see what kind of advice I could get on this forum. To start, I didn't know I sucked up a rope at first just really ran rough all of the sudden. I thought I sucked something up so I ran through an IDF cycle and that actually seemed to run fine until I started in fwd than rough again. I shut it down and towed it back to the launch. when I got back, I looked in the intake grate and saw a whole bunch of rope wrapped around the impeller shaft. Upside down under the jetski with my phone flashlight.....it looks like the bundle of rope stayed mostly in between the shaft seal that goes into engine bay and the impeller. One little piece of rope went back into the impeller, but the wear ring and impeller look OK ?!?! What is my best option:
1. get a long knife and try to cut it out.
2. Remove the grate and try to get better access
3. Remove the Pump to get access from that direction.
4. Something I am not thinking about.

Just wanted to hear if anybody has any good or bad experiences with any of these

1. is the best option, if you have a lift. It can be done on its side onshore also. Takes about an hour and some patience.
