Ring orientation

717 gs engine, do piston rings have a orientation on the piston end cap, seems to confuse, please make it simple in reply

I’m not sure I understand what your asking? Sorry. The ends of the rings go around the locating pin, concave side of the ring goes up, don’t know the year of your machine but looked up the specs for a 97 GSI with a 717 ring end gap was .010 min to .016 max

I’m not understanding, I’ve only ever rebuilt using single ring pistons. Your using a dual ring correct? You have 2 rings for each piston? Is there a locating pin in each groove on the piston?

I understand what your asking, should the end gap if the second ring be 180 degrees from the gap of the first ring. I would really think that each groove would have a locating pin which would determine where the end gap will be as the pin stops the ring from rotating. Is there a locating pin in each groove of the piston?

Yes, all 2-stroke pistons have locating pins for all rings. These are not like automotive rings.

Also all rings have a stamp on them that faces up.

If they are aftermarket pistons then both rings are the same, if OEM one is an "L" ring and the other is a trapezoid so you can't get them wrong.

2 locating pins one in each groove
they are indexed so the ring can’t get into a port opening

Follow the service manual.
Gaskets go on dry, cylinder o-rings get 518 and use the loctite and grease on the correct bolts.
