So I pulled one of my engines on a 98 sportster and currently have it marinating in engine oil to hopefully get it unseized but not too sure if there is much hope for it (boat if from florida and is currently in Colorado)

SBT said they need a good core before I can buy a replacement so unless I can get something done with my core it looks like SBT is not an option.

There are a few sellers on ebay that charge a core fee of about $500 but for such a small engine $1200-$1300 seems steep.

What does everyone think??

Also there are 3 head bolts that snapped (even with heat applied) that will probably need to be drilled out. I'm not sure if this engine is worth the trouble though??

I think I saw this boat in another thread, and I'm not trying to be harsh here. After seeing the pictures in the other thread and the pics. you posted here. I think you need to ask yourself. Is this boat worth saving?

This might be worth more parting out than fixing up. The MPEM alone on a twin engine boat is worth in excess of $1500.00.

If it was my boat and I decided on fixing it, and since you apparently don't have a rebuildable core your best option might be to buy a couple of good used 717's. You might want to contact Nick Minnetonka4me or his brother Jess 99spxxx they'll treat you right.

Please don't take my comments as being critical, I've already had one guy call me an a-hole tonight, I don't want to make it two.

That's okay, I was told the same thing about a 96 chevy blazer, to junk it, give up, whatever. Anyhow, I said screw it and bought a rebuilt engine from chevy for $2300 (gasp....... I know, crazy #'s) and another $300-$400 in misc parts and after about 70-80 hours of work I now have a nice truck with a factory warranty from chevy (the engine anyway). I'm not trying to get rich here LOL just have some fun:)

Also keep in mind this boat was bought cheap (through a charity auction) I did not expect to get a nice boat for $1k buck LOL

as long as there are no holes in the block, I`m pretty sure you can use it as a core...

call SBT and speak to them.

I wrote SBT and told them my old engine is seized and they didn't sound too confident. They basically said they need to see it 1st and if they cant use it no deal (plus I get to pay shipping).

If I can't get the motor unseized I don't think it's even worth attempting to use as a core?

does anyone know what years will work for my boat? Here's a 96 717 for a decent price......I would definitely be paying with a credit card that has good customer support b/c if this engine is not as advertised I would find out pretty quick. I will be buying new carbs so no reason why it shouldn't run if condition good.

If you just need the short block just about any 717 will work, if you're wanting the complete engine, most had a dual carb. setup but some of the later models have single carbs., you will probably want to stick with the dual carbs. I usually don't recommend used motors, but in your case it's a viable option. The 717 HP to reliability is the best motor Seadoo ever made (in my opinion).

my engines use a single carb, so the engine I linked on ebay would work even though it uses dual carbs? Is there any kind of reference through seadoo ect where I can verify what years will work on my boat? if so maybe I'll put in a bid for $600?? Thanks

Yes, you will just use your intake manifold and carb.

Just bought a 717 on ebay for $550 plus $120 shipping. Does anyone think there is a chance someone would want my seized engine for like $50?? LOL I guess it's going in the trash

got your pm and from someone interested in buying my marinating block, $50 bucks with shipping is a done deal, just gotta drain oil and remove exhaust! Thanks!!

I wish you good luck with the motor. I actually know that guy and he's no mechanic...he just slangs parts. But with any used motor you are taking a chance unless its opened up and inspected...which defeats the purpose of a used motor sale. He's not a guy that would sell a locked up motor....but he doesnt know things to look for.

Problem with motors and ebay is if it does turn out to be a turd you are on the hook for return shipping.

Yeah it's a bit of a gamble BUT sbt didn't want to do business and most other rebuilders charge a $500 core fee so it's worth taking a chance. If the seller is honest about compression what else should I look for right out the box? I guess it is possible to test at 145 psi and still have problems that don't appear until start-up.

The nice thing about these engines is I can have it ready to start in maybe 2 hours time, I can't say the same thing for a car/truck junk yard engine......even if you're experienced it's at least a 15hr job installing most vehicle engines (25-30 for me b/c I take my time!!).

SBT will buy it for 100 bucks!

I wouldn't unload it just yet..........................

Not sure why SBT wouldn't take it, I thought as long as it was complete without any holes in it they were good to go. I shipped them a 787 that had water in it for God know how long.

wait on that I agree
sbt
as long as block has no cracks or holes------they also fix blocks with cracks but will charge a small fee for this and then rebuild your cases after welded up
crankshaft --it can have a broken rod they replace everything on your old crank anyway
heads and all the bolts must be there for crankcase to
cylinders---they resleave them so as long as they are not cracked on outside they are good cores- inner cylinder does not matter

does your block have a big hole in it?
you can just buy good cases off ebay for around 200.00

The engine is seized. I contacted SBT and they were not interested, they told me a seized block is not considered rebuildable (of course if I contacted them again I would probably get a different story LOL). I contacted another rebuilder on ebay and they said they would add at least $250 to the purchase price of the rebuild for a total of $950 + shipping (both ways) so about $1100 total

I'm in a bit of a bind here and I hope the ebay seller really has a good used engine to sell me.
