Repacking pump bearings

Has anyone cleaned the grease from the pump bearing and repacked it with new grease without removing the bearing from pump housing? I fear not being able to force new grease into the front bearing. I am starting to think I would be better off to get new seals and remove bearing to repack or just use oil in place of the grease. Any comments are appreciated.
Thanks

Depending on the age of the boat, I would order the OEM rebuild kit and replace the bearings and seals. Just did mine, this year, and the seals were starting to get burnt. Also, word has it the OEM's last much longer the aftermarket... My mechanic said that he had a few customers that went non-oem, and they only lasted three years.

age of boat, how does the grease look etc. if looks ok, just clean out old and repack what you can. order your kit for next year.
