seadoosnipe, i was wondering if you might be able to shead some light on a problem i;m having with my 98 gsxl. first off, the gauges died on me a while back. not sure how to figure out that problem, the other 2 problems i'm having are, the start stop vts buttons were just replaced. on a fully charged battery with spotless connections and tight ground cable (thats new by the way) when i go to start it, it sounds like i'm hitting the start button like on, off, on, off, on, off. there is no constant turning over. bad connection possibly ? and 2nd of all, when she does fire up, after riding for a while ,1-2 hrs, i blow a fuse that kills the ski and leaves me stranded out in the water.
some shops i took it to are saying my MPEM is shot. any way i can test it myself ? could be the reason for the dead gauges ? i'm getting lost with my baby. any help would be awesome. thanks !

Bummer..........

Yeah man, it may need a new MPEM. It sounds like your rectifier/regulator is shot. On any other engine but yours, that part can be replaced. But, your MPEM is what's called a Nippondenso unit which has the rectifier/regulator built into it. So, when it goes bad, you have to reaplace the entire unit.

You might get some kind of confirmation by using a multi meter. Start the engine and test the charging system to the battery. If it's over 14.5 vdc, then this is almost certainly your entire problem.

Normally, snapping the fuse is the rectifer/regulator. The signs your seeing on your gages is because that system is more fragile to electrical surge. They need a lot less amperage to run so if you hit it with a little to much, they'll shut down.

Check all your fuses ........but, it does sound like its gonna have to be replaced.

There is a way to check your magneto but you have to have a six pin socket tester. But, I sure you have AC current to the mpem, it's just not being regulated.............sorry.

well this is the most help any has been with this problem i'm having. i'm going to test the voltage tomorrow and if its over 14.5 then its more than likely my rectifier/regulator. (i really regret jump starting the gsx when i first got it 3 years ago) so lets say i switch out my MPEM for a new/not screwed up one, and she is running like good again, am i going to have to change out my gauges also? could they bo toast since you were saying that they are very sensitive to higher voltage?
