I just bought a 2000 speedster with the 240 hp mercury m2 jet drive. The guy I got t from just had all the carbs rebuilt and fuel tanks cleaned since it had sat for a while. Both he and the mechanics shop that did it confirm it was running when I bought it. It starts an idles fine and even sounds like its reving up when hooked to the hose. When I put it in the water I have no throttle response at all. Won't go over idle speed. About a quarter of the way through the throttle it acts like it wants to go then nothing. Any ideas would be very much appreciated. I'm not a great mechanic so feel free to spell it out like you would a child. I won't get offended.
Thanks for your help.

Water sensor would be the likely culprit or at least the one I would check first, it may be bad or just doing it's job but either way that will prevent the motor from advancing and even starting at all in some cases.

Get a shop manual for the testing procedures to check that sensor and it's input to the ECM you don't want to guess with the electrical components on that powerhead.

Well...

Before I can give you any help... I need to know what engine you have. You said you have the 240 engine... but it's fuel injected (EFI) So... there's no "Carbs" to clean. And since there were multiple iterations of the 240 engine... I think the best thing to do is to just post a couple picture of the engine. (and post the serial number)

BUT... in general... if it will rev up on the hose... but not in the water... the engine compression may be low. (engine warn out)

Thank fellas. I'm sorry if I got the engine specs wrong. Just going by what I was told. It does have carbs though, that's for sure . I'll get pics ASAP. It's being looked at by a guy now so we'll see what he finds

Ok go the numbers but can't upload pictures from this phone. I'll gladly text anyone who can help. Engine serial number is OE374123. Pump #is 0e370781. Tried it on the water again today with no results. Made it to 3500rpms at full throttle. It sounded like to wanted to go but wouldn't. On the hose it makes it to 7000rpms and sounds fine. Any thoughts?

First....

NEVER rev the engine if it's not in the water!!!!!!! It's very easy for a 2-stroke to run-away, and eat itself. Also... without a load... it tells you NOTHING. I can get an engine running on 2 cyl's to rev up out of the water.

Second.........

Since you have a 210 carb engine... your ignition is split. There is a set of low RPM charge coils... and a set of high RPM coils. I'm thinking that either the switch box(s) have gone bad... or the stator has gone bad on the high RPM charge coils. Both can be checked with a simple multi-meter.

But... does it just get to that rpm... and run out of power? or is it feel like it's sputtering?

If it's just feeling flat... then have you checked your compression like I asked 3 days ago?

I just want to stress the importance of a compression test.. It does not matter how perfect things are if you have a poor base engine...

Sorry, no i haven't done a compression test yet. I'm not mechanically inclined enough to do that. I'll be sure never to rev it up on the hose again. Thank you for that advice. I didn't realize it could do damage. I'll get the things you mentioned checked out and go from there.
