Hi,
I'm installing an OEM tach in my 98 GTI. Done a lot of research on line and found two different recommendations for what wire to hook up the grey tach signal wire to.

1. Tap into black/red wire from magneto to rectifier
2. Tap into yellow/black wire from magneto to rectifier

Which is the right one to tap into? Thanks!!

Oh yeah, there is no grey tach wire from the MPEM for the tach on 98 GTIs, so I'll need to hook it up to either the black/red wire or the yellow/black wire from the magneto.

It basically reads the phasing of the power coil. So... tap into the Yellow stator coil.

There was some talk about retrofitting a tach... an as I recall... we agreed to put a high resistance, resistor ( 1K to 1M ohm) to clip any current. You only need a signal for the tach.

Thanks. Yeah, I've got a 20 ohm resistor I'm going to use on the tach wire. I'll hook the tach into the yellow/black wire. Thanks

I don't think 20 ohms is enough resistance. My 95 XP used a 20K ohm resistor according to the shop manual.

Yeah you don't want to make that mistake. BTW which tach did you use? One from a GTX?

This is something on my to do list when I refurb a 97GTI i just bought.
