Questions on dealer repair (? rip off)

Hi Everyone,

I have had to put my 03 GTX supercharged 185 HP Sea Doo in for an engine rebuild (I sucked up an indoor/outdoor rug and blew a piston, and the supercharger).

In having this in for this costly repair - I had a full estimate on what was needed to be done.

Once the engine was rebuilt and installed, they found " It would appear a mouse built a nest behind the gauge cluster and chewed several of the wires. The watercraft has no DESS recognition and our laptop is only able to communicate with 1 of the 3 ECU onboard. The wires seem to be ok despite slight chewing and the issues are likely with the more costly electric module components. ".

I am now told I may need 2 of these computer boards - at a cost of about $1200 each! I have never had any electrical issues in the past whatsoever .... does anyone have any comments on what they have said above? Sound reasonable, or think I am getting ripped off?

My thoughts are if this was not broken before .... that it is something the dealer has broken in my engine repair, and thus they should pay for it.

Any comments and suggestions welcomed.

I used to rent a place about 5 miles away from where I live now. I have always had rat terriers. The neighbor had a nice new Chrysler Lebaron convertable. My dogs tore out the bottom wire harness. Then, when he came into town, he was outraged. He declared that my dogs had demons! (he was catholic!) I told him his car had mice or rats, and that my dogs were only interested in the rodents. He did not believe me. I paid 495.00 for the new wires. And shrugged. What could I do? My dogs definately did it! 2 wks later his car would not start. He took it to the dealer. Turns out the rats ate out several wire harnesses!

Anyway, we wound up friends, and he would come by, get my dogs, and go pet and feed them, and RUN THEM BY his stuff, to see if rats were in it!

So, the point of my story is this:
Go see the damage. Find out if you can soldier, and repair it yourself. Chances are maybe 50-50 that you can fix it. If not, see if you can find a used one, for it's wires. Maybe cut and soldier right at the EDGE of the box, and then other than the patches, it would be fine. I have to say, it must be waterproof. So, that may be a challenge. (this would be assuming you found a bad box, with good wires, to cannibalize. I have not seen inside one of these modern 4-stroke Doos, so I may just be blowing in the wind.

All I am saying is Have a look. See what you think. You are the one paying the bills!

this sounds strange. u blew your motor from sucking up a rug and now for some reason the computer's are bad??? very odd id say. if its just wires then its easy to fix them just fix one at a time, can u take a pic of the wires? i fix crushed and burnt wiring harnesses on cars at work and its not as hard as people think.

A mouse chewed on the wires LoL.
I would take alook at it and work it out first.

Are they a recognised Seadoo dealer, and do they have the test equipment to dop the job right.
Maybe they chopped at the wires themselves, when they realised they couldn't cope with the job.

Hi D 5UPE,

Yes they are an authorized seadoo dealer - so I think they are equiped for whatever they would need.

Have not heard back from them in a while ... going to try to go and get pictures over the next few days. I'll post them when I get them.

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

Strange to say the least!.....

I don't think I've ever heard such non-sense in my entire life!......

I agree. You sucked up a rug and did some damage. You had no computer issues till now. I suspect, they themselves left the compartment open and THEY are the ones with the rat infestation and THEIR rats are what chewed through your wiring. Now, THEY want to blame you.

Sorry, I'm an very pessimistic person when it comes to the honesty of these types of shops. They trouble shoot engines at your expense. YOu take it in for a problem, then they are like, "oh, your #2 injector is bad". So they replace it ($250 bucks) then, when you take it home, you have the same problem. YOu bring it back to them, they find now, the oil pump is bad. That's another $600 bucks..........it never ends. I have repair shops!....That's why I'm here.

If your ski was running fine and you never left the ski open to vermin. How did they get in and chew your wires up? Only if the shop left these components exposed over a period of a couple days, would you see this happen.

Yes, I"d get pictures. The only problem is, there is basically NOTHING you can do about it. You took it to them. YOu are at their mercy. It would take a hidden camera being placed inside the ski to record what was going on at that shop for you to do anything about it...........
