Question about changing wear ring freezer method

Just rebuilt my pump on 95 xp. I want to change the wear ring with the freezer method. Shaft, impeller and cone are still off the pump. Is it ok to put the pump in the freezer with the bearings expsed? They still have a little oil residue on them even though i sprayed a little solvent in there. I could rub a little of the new oil on the bearings to coat them good.

I see no problem in what you're saying, that being said I have had zero success using the freezer method, I've always had to cut them out. I do however put the new wear ring in the freezer overnight before installing it.

Thanks lou, weird how some say it works very well and some have no luch with it. I had put it in the freezer yesterday but had to take off so i pulled it back out cause i didnt want to leave the pump in there for hours. It sweated like crazy when i took it out of the freezer with the temp change so i sprayed it out with solvent and air hosed it. Dont want the exposed bearings to sweat and rust.

Best thing is to use a light coat of wd-40 or oil over the bearings to keep from rusting.

I have never tried to free up the old wear ring by freezing it. Always cut and pound it out. However I just got to thinking.. What if you put the housing in the oven? at say 200 degrese? that would possibly make it expand, then hit the old wear ring with cold water (not the housing). But either way I think the best way still is to cut the old one out and freeze the new one.

I have the plastic housing, not sure how that would work. Me and my brother were talking and wondered about taking it out of the freezer and hopefully the ring would come out, then popping it in the oven to get rid of any sweat in the bearings.

You can put it in the freezer no problem. You gotta remember ppl leave them outside all winter with temps way colder than the freezer and they are fine

The freezer trick only works for installation only of the wear ring and bearings. The idea is that the frozen material shrinks so it slides into the pump housing easily. If you put the pump in the freezer, then it will shrink too, defeating purpose. The only way to get a wear ring out is to cut it.

When you install the new one, put the wear ring in the freezer for a couple hours and it will slide right in the pump. It will slide in and out free for maybe 10 seconds. It warms up fast then it will get real tight.
