I was really bored driving in to work this morning and believe it or not, thinking about a zombie apocalypse and where I'd go when it starts. lol

I was looking at a map a few weeks ago to see how big and wide Saginaw Bay is. It's a 3 hour drive to where a friend lives in the thumb region of Michigan, but saw that Saginaw Bay is only 9 miles from Caseville to Charity Island and then 15 more to Tawas City on the other side of the bay. My friend lives in Harrisville, about 30 miles north of Tawas. Not that I'd attempt the crossing, I'm not that experienced and not sure how big the waves are out on Saginaw Bay or Lake Huron, just daydreaming I guess. If I ran at a decent cruising speed, I could make the crossing of 54 miles in a 1.5 hours, I'd guess.

But, this all got me to thinking about inventing a towable storage 'trailer" type thing, and I searched and found this. Figures, every time I think of something cool, someone beats me to it. lol

Has anyone ever seen one fo these before on the water? http://hydro-trailer.com/

I was thinking, I see X4 hulls all the time in the $50 range, and I was thinking hat I might be able to get one and a whip out my sawsall and cut the back off it at maybe the mid-seat area (or leave it and fiberglass in the back) and remove the top, to make a towable contraption to carry gas, a cooler, and any other gear.

Any thoughts? I'm just really bored at work too, thinking about it. lol

a towed PWC will 'sway' left and right and eventually break your tow rope... they don't seem to track strait when towed...

but add a fin or two and give it a try!

i would think with center fins , and removed sponsons , that would be interesting.......but good idea......although i think that instead of going up there, ill just go to put in bay island.......short run (10 miles) from catawba and isolated enough the the zombies shouldn't be able to get there........

although PLEASE just steal a waverunner / kawi and cut its hull up instead.......don't waste an X4, even in the apocalypse lol

first, i think a hydro trailer would fit the purpose well, and you can find them cheap ($100-200) on craigslist or searchtempest if our patient and find it, then jump,
or go redneck yaght club,
a dam innertube and some bungies

i want to know where you decided on going during the Z.A. i've always wondered myself, right now plan A is the wilderness in Tenn, find a nice cabin and shoot whoever lives there, move in.

anyway, i'd say the x4 hull most certainly could be modded, if you're really creative, like to do fiberglass work, (i mean really like it) but in the end i think your hull mods would cost so much time & effort, and still look fairly home made, that it would be easier to just buy a hydro trailer.

but many standup guys say they just drag a tube along with all the bs bungied down in two or three packages, with a boat bumper in each bag so they float. and move on.

note, hull design aside, i've read that with the hydro trailer, it has a rigging, line system that keep's it from drifting, so even a home made version would need to have more than its design to keep it behind you, its some form of stabilization 3 line system, not just a rope. in other words, you will have additional obstacles to overcome with the drifting with lines, weight distribution, etc.

sorry edit. jjust now noticed that you put the HT in the link already... duh.....

summary: probably could be done, might be cool, but i'd rather you just stumble across a used properly designed hydrotrailer, and use an innertube while you wait.

next question, will a beer float in the river if you have one of those good coozies ? (thinking safety here)

My friend did that with an old Sea-Doo hull, I don't remember what it was but it was like an x4, it worked okay, used it to hull his dog around

I have two extra X4 hulls right now I would almost give away. I've been looking for one of those hydro-trailers forever though and haven't lucked into one. I may have to just do as suggested and just and just make my own. I agree that they do tack back and forth real bad when being towed so some handling mods would certainly be in order.

i still cant believe you people would justify cutting up an x4 hull! why not a stand up or a kawi?

i just threw a nice 98 spx in the dump last week, 20 minutes later I showed up with a 98 GTX,
a bare bones hull isn't worth $50. and isn't worth fixing up either. at least not around here.
you're lucky to get $1600 out of a nice stock x4 in my area, dam lucky.
