Pump Reinstall ??

After rebuilding port engine carb and taking the Sportster 1800 out last weekend to see how she ran I got into some lake grass. I got it cleared out after taking a swim and restarted the boat and made a couple of more passes up and down the lake. All of a sudden the port engine rpm's starting going nuts from 3500-7000 and I knew I had something hung up in the impeller so I limped back in to the dock and put her back on the trailer.

I pulled the pump today and found a two foot long piece of rope wrapped around the drive shaft. After some cutting and tugging I got it out with only a couple scrapped knuckles. I'm ready to reinstall the impeller housing and noticed that the parts cut sheet in my manual calls for using a small amount of "the right stuff gasket" sealer between the pump support and the impeller housing. Other cut sheets at several online sources/parts houses don't show using the gasket material. My question is it necessary to use it?

The up side to having to pull the pump is I know the wear ring is in good shape and the impeller isn't trashed or severely nicked up. Even the oil in the cone was in good shape with a nice amber color and showing just a small amount of darkening..

You need some kind of sealant between the pump, and the shoe. Some years they say to use "The Right Stuff", and other years they used the neoprene seal. If you use "The Right Stuff"... it will be a bastard to take apart later, and it's a pain to clean off for the re-install. If you use a neoprene seal... the pump will slide right off, and the seal will just peal out. It make life SO much easier if you do your own work.

Thanks Dr. for the response. I asked because like you alluded to, the fine folks at Seadoo can't seem to make up their mind. In the " arms wide open" thread I saw them talking about the neoprene seal so I was curious, now I'm glad I wasn't impatient to get it put back together.
