Pump housing splines

I'm in the process of rebuilding the pump housing and I noticed the brass splines are beat up pretty bad one of them is actually has a small 1/8 bend that can be seen from bolth sides. Is this something that can be reworked or does it need to be replaced. I work in a machine shop so I have access to die grinders and metalworking tools so I could rework it myself but I'm not sure if this is a critical area that has to perfect.

I think you mean the pump stator vanes. Yes, I would try to massage them all the same if possible without weakening them but they could break. General rule of thumb I'm going by is there should be less than 1/2 the size of a dime missing from any broken/chipped vane, else performance is lost and it needs to be repaired.

One of the vanes in my pump is rounded over slightly from a piece of gravel no doubt, and I plan on filing it to flatten it out, along with removing any offensive casting flash with a die grinder depending on what I find.

Ok thanks! I was hoping it would be salvageable I saw a new for about $350.00 on the sbt website and I was hoping I could just fix it myself. I was thinking I could mabey heat it up a little and bend it back but my coworker said I might crack it off because brass is brittle so I think I might just die grind it and hopefully I stay in that dime range tolerence your talking about. Stupid rocks!

I meant to say 1/2 the size of a dime! Anyway, you can send off the pump housing and it can be brazed on to restore bronze vanes, as long as the heat won't damage any plastic housing parts. I bet you could even probably braze something on yourself, like a copper penny for instance, then use a die grinder to reshape it.

I think I can straighten mine with just a flat file!

Yes I understood what you said about the 1/2 the size of a dime I worded my post wrong sorry about that. I need to learn how to post pics because I wish I could show you. It's at my shop so Monday I will figure out how and post a pic it bends over about the size of a quarter and creates a 1/8 lip on the spline and the other splines are just nicked a little. Good idea on brazing it it's been awhile but I remember brazing in school. Thanks!

just thought I would update this thread I was able to heat up the brass veins and bend them back into shape I also used a large brass punch to get them shaped a little better. the rest of the damage was cured with a die grinder! I was a little skeptical about bending them but with a little torch heat and some vise grips they bent right back! it prob wasn't the smartest thing to do but it was bent so bad I had nothing to loose.
