PTO, the rubber shaft boot, and those clamps

I just removed the pump and shaft from my 98 GTXm and found that the rubber boot was clamped in place by cable-ties, instead of the metal locking band. Is this an acceptable practice? I ask because I really get pissed at those damn metal band clamps, but I see how well they work in this application, and have no snaggable protrusions.
Fingers are crossed.....

As long as the grease worms living in the splines are kept fed that's all that counts. If they go hungry they eat your splines. I imagine nylon zip-ties should work if you don't have those stainless clamps. Worm type hose clamps will throw it out of balance so I'd choose zip ties. FWIW, most FAPS (Favorite Auto Parts Stores) have stainless steel zip ties now. Or get the correct clamps so you can cut them off again next time. :)

Oetiker clamp pliers are what you're after, but many guys just use cable ties.

Lisle 30500 CV Boot Clamp Plier

You can get them on A mazon for $18.11 shipped. Best money you'll ever spend and you can keep reusing the metal clamps

Funny you said that, i was this close to using worm clamp on the boot until i started thinking about that myself.

You can re-use the larger clamp and they are easy to remove with basic pliers. The smaller clamp is the PITA and thats the side that usually gets the zip tie.

you mean wedging a flathead and twisting, then shoving pair of nips under it, twisting and cursing and cutting the dam thing off while destroying the rubber boot completely isn't the best approach ?

That's the one I was going to try first....
I add a blowtorch to the standard mix though.
Starting some tough-ass problem on fire always makes me feel like I've won...
.. for a few minutes anyway..

And here I thought that was the proper way of doing it...

mine came apart easy enough when i was pulling the pump out of the gtx, but that clamp was a bear to get back on. i could get it within a 1/4 inch or so, then it would slip off and i'd have to start cussing and throwing things. i ended up buying a little 3-pack of mini pliers that had something like this in it:

once i got the clamp close enough, i slipped that animal over the little tangs and it went right back together. i had been looking at the oetiker clamp pliers online, but i seem to remember they were all like 70-80 bucks, the 3 pack of mini tools was like 10 or 12 bucks at the home depot down the street.

I've owned mine for years, the lisle's and didn't pay but $20 something. I think I might have gotten them at Pep Boys, but possibly amazon.

Can you use a worm clamp for substitution of the small clamp? I had the dealer put my old one on when they did my baffles and they used my old clamps, and the small one came off and is no good. Keeps coming off. I used a worm clamp to get back on the water. Do you suggest I change it? Or will it be ok?
Thanks

Try Stainless Steel 304 ties, about $3 shipped for ten. I tighten them on the PTO boot, then snip and leave 1/4" then turning with a small pair of needle nose pliers to get it even tighter. I tried the nylon cable ties, couldn't get them tight enough. The worm clamp is sloppy, I just didn't like it, I got the SS tie idea because I've used them on a fabricated turbo exhaust with my car hobby.
