PTO grease fitting spitting grease out

I’ve been trying to figure out a water leak/ cavitation from idle on a 98 Spx. I’ve got it borrowed down to the carbon seal and have been trying to put grease into the pto fitting to get the stainless float ring to snug up to the carbon ring. When I put grease in it just comes back out the fitting and onto the hull.

Ive seen pictures of other peoples boot that goes around the end of the pto and theirs are bulging with grease but mine is not and I was just at the ramp doing some testing and could see the drive shaft move back towrd the engine slightly while reving it.

So is it normal for the zerks fitting to spit grease back out?

I should also mention it’s a new to me ski and I have no idea if the rubber bumpers are on the ends of the drive shaft but I have those ordered and a carbon seal kit .

A zerk is a one way valve, if grease is coming back out it's bad. They are pretty generic though, a good auto parts store should have a replacement

I would check the rubber driveshaft bumpers and the rubber boot that holds the carbon ring. The grease helps but isn't what should be holding the stainless hat secure.

I plan on replacing everything carbon seal related, the drive shaft bumpers, wear ring and now the zerks fitting. Assuming I can actually get the stainless float ring to move and get the clip off. I’m just trying to figure out what part is causing the problem so I know it’s fixed once I install all the new parts.
There’s only about a 1/16th inch gap between the seal and float ring when I had reved the engine and it would move back but it was sealed at idle and with the engine off. I wasn’t able to move the shaft by hand. Before I put grease in it I was able to move the shaft back and forth with my hand with little to no resistance. But when I try to put more grease in now I can see the shaft move towards the pump and the bellow compress but right when I take the grease gun off the fitting the grease comes out and the bellow pushes the shaft back towrd the engine.

It is typically a combination of the rubber accordion boot and driveshaft bumpers.

Thanks for the help. I got the c clip off the drive shaft and it moved an uncomfortable amount back towrd the jet pump. The bellow is the same size as the new one so I assume it’s missing the bumpers on the drive shaft. And 1 more question because I second guess myself. When reinstalling the jet pump do you have to use silicon or is the new neoprene gasket fine? I’ve read dr Honda’s write up on the wear ring a few times and it doesn’t say anything about using any but I do second guess my self a bit.
