Ok, as I've said, I have a few seadoo's now and I have always wondered one thing about them. I have always worried when I leave my machine unattended because I dont want it stolen. I always take my "key" with me, but what stops someone else who owns a jetski to just plug their key in and drive off? Are these keys specific to each machine? I have a 96 and an older one that doesnt even need this key. What else can I do to try to secure it more?? Are these keys only for that one machine??

The ones with the DESS key, (like mine) are key specific. That is, it has a little bitty computer chip in it, that has to be programed for that ski.

Now, I don't know anything about the older machines. Except they must have felt a need for the DESS thing, and went to it.

Some of the older cars, we used to install an EXTRA button, down by our leg, that HAD to be pressed, at the same time as turning the key, so as to foil an attempt to steal our cars. Kind of a 1970's thing. Even some installed a switch down by the seat, that turned off the ignition. I suppose something like that could be done to a Doo. Especially if the ignition system were sort of simple, which the ones with a DESS system is not!

Hide an extra switch, under the seat, and you could frustrate the modern teenager!

DESS = Digital Electronic Security System.

I kind of doubt it that you could add it EASILY, as it is dependent on the rest of the computer in the ski.

I suggest that you add some sort of WATERPROOF key system, or marine key system, if you can get a wire diagram for it. You might have to design a little box cover for it, to protect it. If you are handy with wiring, you could probably do it.

OR, just add a MAIN power switch under the seat, that unhooks all the electronics. If you do this, get a marine grade switch. I know those are available. Maybe even cover it with a vinyl cover, to hide it from the idiot that pokes his nose in there.

Sorry I can't help much.

Maybe somebody else will chime in.
