Power to dash without the key 04 GTX 4tec

Took the GTX out last weekend without any issues and went to head out this morning but had a dead battery. I have never had that hapen before, so I threw the battery on the charger. As soon as I connect both wires to the battery, you get the familiar beeps and the dash lights up and says "KEY". I put the key on and started up fine. I took the key off and the dash stays on along with the beeping like the key is still on. Fairly stumped as to even where to begin, any help is greatly appreciated.

Another problem just noticed

Along with the above issue, I just noticed that the GTX will start up without the key when I attach the battery. On the dash it will say "KEY" then go to Maint, and I can start it up without the key. I ran the diagnostic and no codes came back.

Pilfers,

I guess no one knows because my 06 GTI has the same issue which I posted weeks ago with no responses.

If you figure it out please email me or post the solution and I will do the same.

Its hard to guess on an issue like that....but nothing gets a signal without the key, so try disconnecting your lanyard/key post wires, then hook the battery back up and see if you can start it without the key, It is a possibility that you have a bad/shorted key.lanyard post.

DESS post

Friend of mine said it sounded like the DESS post. I am going to be checking it out this week. I'll post when it gets fixed and what we did to get it corrected.

Pilfers,

Have you had any luck with this? Seems like another member is having the same issue as we are.

Thanks,
LB

It seems to be the DESS. I unhooked the grey wire from the DESS and then hooked up the battery. After hooking up the battery, the ski did not act like the key was in. I am guessing either some salt water or grime of some sort got in with the magnets and is forcing the cloop to stay open on enough of a continuous basis. I have order a new DESS and it will be here by the 26th of June. After I install it, I will post to let all know if that was indeed the problem or not.

It could be the electronic control module - we just replaced ours due to the battery going dead. The ski worked fine for 2 weeks after a battery replacement then began to drain battery.

The dealer was very surprised to see this component die as it's very rare - a 1st for them.

Just something else to consider - unfortunately a very $$ part $534.99 to be exact - I'm trying to get SeaDoo to reimburse me.

Hey Pilfers. Any luck changing the DESS? This weekend I'm going to install a battery switch on mine.

Thanks

I just got my new switch in the mail yesterday. I did not, but should have, realized I needed to order the male adapters on the end of the wires. I sure hope the local dealer has those in stock, going to find out today. If they have the connectors, I will find out tonight if that post was the problem or not. Will let you all know when I get it in.

Post

It was the DESS post after all. Got it changed out and works like a champ. Was able to find the post for ~$75. Just a nice reminder here... if you buy the post, make sure you also get the female connectors that go on the ends.... I thought they came attached. Luckily the local Seadoo dealer had some. Anyways.... the ski runs like a champ. I guess either the magnets went bad or got some water/grime in there somehow.

I think I am having the same problem with my 05 RXP, along with some other electrical gremlins....can you tell me where you got that part and if it was a simple install?

part lookup

I did a search on the part number and found it cheapest on Amazon.com. It was VERY easy to install. All I had to do was unscrew the 6 screws on the bottom of the steering column to get access and also take out the panel in the holding area(behind the fire extinguisher for mine). If the DESS is the same for your model as it is for mine, you will have 3 wires (grey, black/yellow and black/purple<- i think that last one is correct). Anyways, I taped on a leader wire and pulled the 3 wires up through the column so I could use that leader wire to guide my new DESS wires back through. I added the female connectors and pullged them into the connector. Again, it was very easy.
