possible rebuild

Sorry for all the questions,. I have a 2000 787 rfi engine. It has about 250 hours , I am pretty mechanical . Is doing a top end rebuild something i could do without opening a can of worms or should i have a local shop do it. I see the kits on here WSM, The shop wants 12 to 1400 . Any replies would be great/ / Thanks in advance. Is it cheaper to buy a 787 reman or rebuild the original engine.

I would say step one, check compression. That will tell you what the next steps would be. Hours alone do not really give you the full picture.
