Polk MM651 speakers on 2012 Speedster 150

There is a slight difference. Most people wont hear it though. The main difference is the UM are just built to withstand sun and water a bit more. The UM are also 4 ohm where the MM are only 2 ohm. For most people thought that doesnt mean much. It actually makes it easier for the power source to push them.

Interestingly enough the UM speakers say that they are 3 ohm on them. I don't know if they recently changed something or not.

I was wondering what your Polk MM651UM speakers sound like (no amp I assume) sounds like vs the Polk MM651 speakers with the factory Jensen radio. Thanks

There is no comparison between the Polk Speakers and the Jensen speakers. I am using a JBL MA 6002 2 channel AMP with these. It is not a very expensive amp, but it makes a lot of difference compared with just running off of the head unit. I had a pair of Alpine speakers before these Polks and the Alpines were way better than the Jensen speakers too. The Polk speakers are much, much better than the Alpines too.

I based my previous comment off what all the Polk literature says and what the box they came in says....so just to be sure I opened up one of the sets I have and they do indeed say 3 ohm on them....thats odd. Now i need to call their tech people with some questions.

I dont think it wil be an issue, but just to make sure i will call Polk and JL Audio tomorrow. The JL amps can easily handle a 2 ohm load. With 2 sets of these wired in parallel on each channel it will actually be like a 1.5 ohm load.....so i just gotta make sure thats ok. i think it will be. I'll let ya know what they both say.

WOW, that's surprising. Can't wait to see POLK explanation on it.

I just looked thru POLK MM651UM document on their website. It shows 4 ohm too..

Just got off the phone with Polk tech support. It was a misprint on the the stickers on the back of the speakers. They are truly a 4 ohm speaker.

I also called JL audio tech support and he said the M700/5 amp i bought can easily handle the system i planned out. Now i just gotta get it done. Of course the only day without rain the in the last 4 days and im stuck at work.

Thanks for the update RFoster! That is good information to know.

Hey guys, looking for answers before my db651's show up. I'm looking to do a clean install, I do not want to see any brackets to make these speakers fit; I know I might have to get creative to make it work but if there is anybody here to give the best details possible I sure would like to know what you did. The 651's come with adapter brackets and I also bought the scosche adapters as a back up plan. Also did anybody reinstall the speaker baffles that were behind the jensens? Clearly Seadoo went out of there way to put these on and to even add foam. Not sure if they did this for sound quality or just and added measure from the elements.

Interesting, has everyone added an amp as well?... Also, I guess you guys just upgraded the speakers and not the head unit? How do they sound "without" an amp? Also, if the screws didnt line up how do you guys get away with it? How does adding a LED help you? sorry for the questions.. but I may be interested in doing this..

Any speaker is better than the stock speakers. But you would need amp if you want to enjoy your speaker potential. Led rings work as a spacer.

I used Exile speakers and they lined up exactly at sea doo factory hole.
Samsung S4...

I kept the original head unit for now, but added a marine 4 channel amp. Without an amp you just won't get a good sound. I picked the Rockford Fosgate M400-4D. As far as mounting the speakers in the original holes between the seats, they don't line up as you know. The original speaker holes are about 1/4" or less from the edge of the deck cutout. The PolkAudio speaker holes line up right at the edge of the deck cutout. I used a roto-zip and notched the cutout slightly to allow the mounting screws go all the way through without grabbing anything. You will need longer screws than provided by Polk Audio. Then on the back side, in the engine compartment I used the mounting ring/adapter that comes with the speaker. The longer screws will screw into this adapter. The notches in the deck cutout will prevent the speaker from shifting. I did not use the speaker baffles. Hope this helps.

Ok Got it!

Didnt realize that you can get to the holes in the engine bay! wow! and LEDS as a spacer! nice..

Thanks SeaDoo fan for the info, I was thinking of doing this exactly how you described it. Right now I have everything else done; 600watt amp and a 10" polk sub mounted right between the passenger handles on the left side of the boat. It sounds sweet right now even with the jensens but I can tell they are on the verge of blowing when I push them, since the amp puts out 55 watts RMS which is almost their full capacity.

My Install, I had some parts laying around which was a 600 watt sony amp, Brand new Polk GNX 10", Garmin Nuvi 350 with sd slot. What I did purchase was a sub grill, Polk db651's, a 2 farad cap, 12 Volt acc plug 3 socket in dash near radio, scosche radio cover (the stock one was broken) and wiring. I kept the Jensen even though I'm not a fan, it does it's purpose and it has fairly good sound. The older garmin is great because It can except a 8gb sd card loaded with music so not only can I control my music I can see it as well; right now I think have 50 albums loaded in the thing. The audio gets to the head unit through the aux connection which I needed to drill a small hole through the backside of radio cover. The amp is mounted behind the drivers seat on plexi glass and the 2 farad cap is mounted behind the ski pylon horizontal. The db651's where mounted with the supplied speaker adapters which I needed to modify and buy longer stainless hardware. The cap was needed because with the system pumping I was getting 12 volt low warnings and that was with a new battery. The cap works flawlessly and the warnings are eliminated. The hardest part with the sub install was just finding the courage to cut the hole through my beautiful boat. Just make sure you tape off accordingly so you don't scratch the get coat. ( I used a jigsaw)
