I've had my boat for a few years. I bought it used and the steering assist was disconnected. I'd like to try and hook it up but I think I have some part missing. Could anyone out there take a quick pic of your steering assist assembly on the engine for me? Mines a 2001 challenger 2000 but I'm sure most 240 efi are the same set up....TIA!

no pictures really needed on this one. The cable mounts to the engine, and hooks to the throttle arm. There really isn't any special parts. Also... it's in a spot that may be hard get to on some boats.

Personally... I have mine disconnected, and it's easier to control the boat without it. (when close to a dock) If you need to bump the throttle at low speed... then just manually bump it.

Thanks Tony.... thats what I've been dping. The reason I want to try and hook up the steering assist is to bump up the throttle while starting. I've had a starting issue ever since I got the boat and I'm tired of throwing money at it.... If it were a car engine I could figure it out but this thing is just a pita... I've taken it to a shop twice and still isn't fixed.... trying something cheap cause I don't want to keep throwing money at this problem

hey when you talk about starting do you mean when you have the boat going and you turn it off to lets say pick up a rider then try to turn the engine back on and the boat wont start, kinda like flooded engine. My gf had this problem when I went to go put the trailer on the ramp and she turned the boat off and could not get it started. I had to call her and tell her how to open the engine compartment and have someone open up the throttle as she started the boat. This method works like a charm and I only have to do it once every other time I take the boat out. I wish there was some kind of choke lever as the boat wont let u rev the gas when u start.

That's exactly what it's doing. Did it to me 5 times last night.. it's just getting old and I need 2 people to start the dang thing....

Umm....

OK... I understand. If I get under my cover... I'll try to get something for you. Have you simply tried raising the idle a little? There's a screw on the side of the throttle arm for that.

Never thought of the idle screw.... I'll try that as well... I cant for the life of me figure out how the steering assist is hooked... that why I think I'm missing a part or two

Iv tried the steering wheel trick as well as jiggling the throttle but they don't work for me but I'm going g to try the screw

Well adjusted the throttle screw to about 1400 rpms while idling in the water.... it started strong many times without hesitation. ... knock on wood this simple adjustment does the trick!

1400 is a little high. I would try 1100 if it's still stable there. I think I'm between 900 and 1000 RPM.

Finally remembered... and had a chance to get a few pics. The first is the mount. The cable just clamps onto that thin aluminum. It's under (sort of) the throttle cable mount. The second is where the end of the cable hooks. It's the round barrel on the plastic throttle link. It's basically at the bottom, and slightly behind the vapor tank. It's a real bastard to get to.

After looking at the pics... I should just take my cable the rest of the way out. It's starting to vibrate loose, and it's liable to get caught in the rest of my linkage.
