Overheat during flush?

I was flushing the engine (240 EFI, '03 Islandia) after a couple hours run on the ICW and the overheat alarm went on after about 3 minutes. Seemed to have good flow out. Didn't have any issues on the ICW either. Ideas? (excuse the newb questions, please...)

M-2 flushing...?

If you had no problems with the motor when you were out in the waterway, then it ran hot while flushing, there are only two causes that I can think of. Their wasn't sufficient flow to the engine or your not flushing according to the manafacturers specifications............
I wouldn't worry about it as long as it's o.k. out in the water. As a matter of fact, I don't think your suppose to run the engine to flush the salts out of the engine...........

Thanks. You're right, I don't have to run the engine to flush. But, I should be able to idle it on the hose without overheating... hummm. Where's the tell-tale supposed to be on this boat? Darn manual doesn't even mention it (I need the elusive M2 Jet Drive Operator's manual!). Is it that little bronze fitting on the edge of the swim-platform?

ok...tell-tale line was plugged. I cleared it, then left it disconnected from head, hooked up garden hose. Saw no flow from fittings on either head. Backflushed from top of both heads and had flow out of pump. Engine overheat still coming on... Anyone else have this happen? Maybe there isn't enough flow from the garden hose to fill the engine?

I'll do some searching tomorrow for some information on your m-2. I pm'd JoeZ, the admin that is in charge of the manuals and he told me he is looking high and low to find the manual. If it is availiable somewhere we will get one for you, and have it in the library.

Thanks, Karl. Something weird is going on with flushing. I should have flow through the entire engine. I'll do more digging and try to get to the bottom of this.

Bump... anyone else ever have this issue? I can't be getting a thorough engine flush if the water doesn't flow out the tell-tale port. Tried a shorter hose, but still no good flow.

I have the original operators manual for my 2000 Islandia with the mercury M2. it doesn't have much detail beyond basic flushing instructions. I bought a SELOC shop manual from repairmanual.com (SL1416). Its listed for mercury outboards and all 2-stroke engines 1990-2000. includes efi and optimax stern drives.

I too have an '03 Islandia with the 240 EFI. I read in either the M2 manual, or the Islandia manual that water will not flow through the tell tale port while running the engine at idle (which you should be doing to flush with your garden hose). I have flushed my boat everytime I pull it out of the water and water has only run out of the tell-tale port twice (flushed 6-8 times thus far).

Interestingly, this fact is mentioned in my Seadoo operators guide, but NOT in either the M2 Jetdrive operator's manual or the service manual.

From the operator's guide: "Water Bypass System: At idle speed, there will not be a water flow through this outlet. When engine is running above idle speed, water must flow through this hole. This allows air in engine water jacket to escape."

This seems to contradict the service manual, which says, in the water bypass installation page: "The water bypass system is designed to improve powerhead cooling at idle speed."

Maybe they mean, almost idle speed.

If you find a manual for a 2005 200hp opti with the m-2 let me know.

I was also preparing my M-2 EFI for the winter when the hot warning chime came on after 5 minutes of idling. I increased the water flow in the garden hose closer to full-on rather than a low-flow and now the warning chime does not come on.
