Outboard engine

Hey peeps, going back to school so I'm putting the boat away till next vacation.

I've been thinking about moding the boat with a propeller outboard engine; eliminating both inboard engines, adding a few feet to the body and adding a few bars (saw a boat with speakers on top and found out its an easy add-on). The job does ask for a nice amount of $, but I'm gonna try to get my hands on a nice motor first (might go with a Yamaha 200hp).

Well, if the project does star rolling you guys will see pics with a before and after! even though it will start happening like in 5 months after I get vacation for the university.

Putting an outboard on a seadoo...now that's a waste of money... The whole purpose of a seadoo is to get away from a prop drive.

Karl

Reason being, even if I do sell the jet boat for X amount I'll have to then buy a new one in the states, pay shipping, taxes and a new registration to the country which I'll use it in, in which case that amount would be way to much and I can't afford.

The reason I'm thinking bout this little project is cause I've seen propeller motor boat reach higher speeds and give a nice wave, plus fixing outboard engines are quicker and cheaper. I did see a seadoo sportster same as mine with the mod I mentioned and I was amazed! That's the main reason I started thinking bout it.

Been Thinking the same! my 1995 speedster is just getting too old now and has too many issues, Whip out all the 16 year old bits sell my one good engine and my 2x good pumps and stick on a Yamaha 150 2008 4 stroke which I have in the yard and I have a light powerful boat with a well designed hull which is realiable looks good and has a huge locker were the engines used to live for skis and boards, oh and I have found that the jet boats are great in flat flat water but I live in the UK and I can see why a rib is the boat of choice here a jet boat is down to 25 knots in a chop

Not to feed the insanity of pulling out Jetdrive engines, sealing up fiberglass and making an outboard mount..... OMG, Shoot me!

I was actually looking at a MinnKota Quick release that could mount on the stern of my boat for an electric for those days of fishing on the swimdeck. Power could be easily run into the engine bay and connected to the battery.

I spent quite a few days this summer finding those shorelines with just the perfect direction breeze that would allow me to cast off the back just drifting. It would have been nice to have an electric that could be quickly attached/removed for those days.

Some of the quick release plates leave very little behind that would be in the way for normal boating/swimming.

yikes... 2 year old thread

+1^

David, you already have the expensive part, a 150HP four stroke. You would be much happier with finding an outboard 1995 hull to attach said engine. You are in the UK, I don't know how many seadoo boats were sold there, but in the US there is at least one in every small town with a population of over 1500. It would be to your advantage either way. If they are rare there, part the boat out and make some money. If they are common, sell the whole boat. Then use the funds to buy a nice 1998ish or newer hull for your outboard.

Clearing the swim platform on your boat would require an aluminium transom mount/extension. That would probably make your boat prone to proposing through. This is a nice read. http://www.marineenginedigest.com/specialreports/transombrackets.htm I would imagine if you went through all that trouble, you could fab a plate to fit over the length of the jet intake, then maybe glass over it, sand until your itchy, and gel coat the whole mess.

No offense, but this is about the dumbest thread I've seen in a long time. SeaDoo boats are not engineered for outboard motors. I think BRP knows more about building boats and pwc's than even the experts on this forum.

If you want an outboard boat, buy an outboard boat.

You could fab a mount from square tubing and a bit of plate. The mount would disconnect from the pieces that are attached to the bottom of the swim platform. I would recommend aluminum if possible.

Agreed. This is for people with WAY too much free time on their hands!

Gamerse, that's actually a great idea. Like the swim ladder, it would be out of the way and hidden. Only to be used when fishing, then gone.

I think I may start a new thread on this as I don't want this good idea mixed up with the totally stupid idea of actually converting a Jetboat into a boat run by an outboard. I agree with everyone else, a SeaDoo should not be converted to an outboard. Heck, boats without motors are stupid cheap around here. The motor can be as much or more than the hull!

Yea wish i could say something positive but this is like turning a sportscar into a pick up. U can buy a boat with an outboard way cheaper. Youll have to much weight with that outboarc hanging out.

Defeats the purpose of the jet boat. Supposed to be a sport boat made to turn on a dime and have a helluva time on the water. Outboard would take away your fun. If you would rather have a prop boat, sell your Doo and buy a Run-a-bout or a pontoon. Personally, neither of those other options sound appealing but that's my opinion.

Whatever you wanna do... :)

Anyone want to make the best of this thread, we could change the topic to things we would rather change than our drives. Or an admin could do us all a favor and close it rofl. It is not turning out to be a constructive thread at all.

I would rather change the fiberglass in my hull, than my jet to an outboard.

I think the best thing would be to close it... Hahahaha. :D

I got a '79 corvette that I don't drive much so I was thinking if I took the 350 out and installed a couple 787 jet drives and a little epoxy to make it water tight, I could have the only jet boat on the lake with a T-top. What do you guys think?

My boat has twin viper engines for some reason....

Here is a pic of a speedster hull running a 75hp evinrude-

I understand it sounds Dumb and stupid but please constructive arguments only and who has the time to draw a seadoo pickup just to make fun of someone, quite sad really. You can't get parts in the UK and unless they are in full working order these boats are worth nothing. I have started parting out, Think I will just cut it up into very small pieces when I am done and post a pic of that for the kids on here to enjoy.

The point is look at that boat. The amount of fiberglass work that was done on it would be way more than parts to get the original engines up and running. That's not even counting the outboard and necessary controls.
