One problem after another!

Well, in an economy that is not giving me enough money to play with my toys or do anything fun, cause the wifey has me saving it for a rainy day, I had to spend those rainy day funds on something that wasn't too fun!!!!!!!!

I'm going to post some pix, they are not seadoo related but are why I was not in the forum yesterday and will most likely, after this thread, not be in today either, until late night anyway.

These pix I'm going to post, are from a V-6 engine. I"m not going to describe the problem or what they are. I'm hoping to see how many members can chime in to give info, that will show if you know what your looking at when it comes to trouble shooting.

These pix and the problem I faced, can easily be crossed to a problem that would occur to a 4-TEC engine or any 4 stroke motor.

Let me get these pix up and go back to work..........I hope to see you guys later tonight!!!!

The bolts sticking out of the diet coke box have been cross threaded... I didnt see it, but i aslo am looking at a small i.e. window while i work :D

Looks like someone blew a head gasket or maybe worse. I would think about selling it as most of the engines that I have seen when over heated the rings will end up with problems. [useing oil] I may not know what I am looking at. So good luck. Robin

Intake gasket is gone allowing coolant into the oil. Replace the gasket and do an oil flush. Hopefully the main bearings are still OK. If it was mine I would at least give at try for the cost of a gasket, rather than replace the engine right off the bat. In my world, my time is free.......

Aaron:cheers:

You won the prize!!!!!

My wifes car, it's a 1997 Tarus with the 3.0 V-6. It's the luxory package.

Now, what kinda of prize can I give ya!!!?....LOL

Yeah, the head gasket and the #1 cylinder blew, causing all the oil and water mix you see in the valve cover and intake manifold. I don't know who it was that mentioned "toss it"..... but remember, .......its "me"... I have a hard time throwing mechanical stuff away.

The compression was fine, except for that cylinder, which is understandable. I have already lapped the valves, which looked good. I have already used a straight edge to determine if my heads are warped, they are not, so it's clean up time, a new set of gaskets and it's back on the road for this car. I need two more years out of her before buying the old lady a new car. This is a 97 Ford Tarus with 150,000 miles on it.

When it started running rough, their was no water in the oil vice versa. The gasket blew right at the point where the water was dumping into the cylinder, then out the tailpipe. I made the decision on the condition of the spark plug and compression test..........

Great answers you guys.........,

I should have this all back together by weeks end. Oh, BTW, the gasket kit and oil ran $237 bucks. To put this in a shop, well over $2000.... so, that was also a no brainer..........

Ya'll have a good weekend.........

Cooling system

Judging by the cooling system passages in the heads and intake manifold it looks like you'll be replacing freeze plugs soon too.
DAWG

All 4!...

Oh, that's a given. I have often made the comment if you ever take an engine done to the cylinders, you replace everthing in the way of maintenance. These things, unlike the easier rear wheel drives from the 60's and 70's are just a nightmare to replace even the serpentine belt.

Yeah, I've got 4 new freeze plugs (actually had a temp in from one that popped out last year). This engine has been a lemon since the day I bought it. I got a good deal in 2000 for it, with only 27,000 miles on it, $5,000 bucks, so I couldn't pass it up. It is the luxory model with all the bells and whistles but I can say one thing, when you get the nice stuff, the wiring nightmare is un-real when you go to trouble shoot.

I also have a new water pump, idler pully and a couple sensors that look dry-roted (cam shaft positioiner) from the heat.

You know, when you got one apart, you look at all this stuff because together, it's a pain in the butt to get to when it's all together.

I've actually thought about replacing the O2 sensors since they are also a pain to get to but they are pretty high priced.

I only plane to keep the car another year or so till my truck is paid for, then I'm going to let the wifey get a new car.........

THanks for all the input. It shows we got some really smart mechanics in the forum.

During the inspection, the head gasket was obviously the problem, cracked between the water jacket and cylinder. So, all gaskets are being replaced along with the parts I listed above.

If anyone can think of anything else I might oughta do, since I'm done to this point in the engine, put your two cents in. I'd rather know I covered everything than to put it back together and find I have another problem.

Oh yeah, I did replace the thermo too........

Um, my guess is head gasket.

But I think I may be late to this party:reddevil:

Gonna cost you about $40 to fix that.

Or, take it to the dealer and let them charge you $1200:ack:

Thermostat

Yo SNIPE, make sure the temp number stamped on the thermostat ( should be 195 degree) is correct. My good friends wife has the same Ford and he purchased a thermostat at NAPA and installed it on his 3.0
It ran like hell after he was done and "check engine" light was on. I went to his house with my scanner and saw where the engine was not coming up to proper temp. Pulled out the new thermostat and it was a 180 instead of a 195. Correct part number on the box...........wrong part inside.
Yeah, odds are that your 02 sensors have been taking a beating from the coolant in the combustion chamber but because of the cost I would wait too and see if they survived. I'd give the throttle body a proper cleanin' while I had it off too.
Good Luck, DAWG

There's a GM v6, they put it in the malibu's I can't remember what size.... The intake gaskets leak from the dex cool, thus putting antifreeze into the crankcase... Happens to almost all of them.

Yup its a FORD!

I know whats wrong!!!! You know how ford is written in a silver oval well the engineers at ford have finally circled the problem. FORD!

heard a rumor there was a class action lawsuit about dexcool. v-8 vortec engines with dexcool had serious intake gasket failures. some even the intakes were damaged by the coolant.
happened to my dads 98 silverado. the oil turned into a milkshake ( non-drinkable kind). we ended up changing the head gaskets to the upgraded rubber ones, replaced the intake because it was eaten away around the coolant ports, and flushed about 5 gallons of diesel fuel through it to wash out the tainted oil. that was roughly 3 years ago and it was the second time it had happend. the first time it happend the rubber intake gaskets werent available yet

Check the radiator

With coolant in your oil you also have oil in your coolant. Flush the radiator and get the system as clean as possible before restoring her. You got yourself a gulf of mexico situation in your radiator - possibly

Hey if that gasket set didn't come with new head bolts you may want to check on those... I BELIEVE they are Torq-to-spec. meaning they stretch as you torq them down and are NOT reuseable. that may just be on the 3.8s but double check that.

Never mind I just saw the date of this post....
