One huge issue with rebuilding a 2003 GTI LE, single carb

OK, I checked everything from previous posts. Basically, I could reuse the needle valve 2.0 that the dealer ordered two weeks ago. So I would have to order the carb + part number 75 270500427 ls jet. That would cost me 315.00$ Canadian and of course, with customs, it would cost me something in the vicinity of 375.00$ Canadian dollars total at my door.

Am I missing any parts like gaskets, lube or something?

Between having to re-check timing, check engine for defects or replacing the carb, I have the feeling that replacing the carb first would be the best next move. If with a new carb the ski still has problems, then I would definitely tell the dealer to fix HIS issues, not mine.

As I said, I could probably do that with a friend of mine. It doesn't seem to be that much complicated for him (he already rebuilt a carb for me for a trimmer and he had fixed the issue fast). And he comes to my cottage quite often so we could even test it directly on the lake.

Should I start there because of all the work the dealer did, the only thing not under warranty is the carb?

Thanks.

Benji.

Email osdparts.com and ask for a,price on a drop in ready set up even if it is not listed on their site they can probably help you get a new base gasket too.

I am talking about the gasket between the carb and the engine. Is this the base gasket? Since the carb is new and even if I have to open it to change ls, I wouldn't need any other gasket right? Spoke to my friend and he is willing to assist me (actually, I would assist him...). If someone could get me a part number it would help but I will search osdparts.

Email osdparts.com and ask for the carb you listed from ebay. They will rejet and change the needle and seat for you if they sell you the carb from what I'm told

Talk to Nick at OSD parts. He has been very helpful with getting my ski running.

OK, new carb on its way. Nick at OSD wasn't sure about the needle but I know I have a new one on mi ski if required. For the rest, his carb is plugNplay. Of course, another 400$ CDN for me...

It comes with the base gasket. It is the only gasket you will need.

OSD is very reputable and Nick is a heckuva good guy! Good choice. Btw...I had similar issues as you, and upon the advice of mikidymac I bought a new carb from OSD, bolted it on & it ran like a champ.

Can't wait to get that carb! People told me I was spending for nothing but due to the lockup with the dealer, I had to make a move. Basically, if the issue remains with a new carb, it will point out to the new engine or timing and then, this will be under warranty. I have a year to make it right (less 6 months of winter...).

I am still trying to determine if the carb I ordered from OSD has a 2.0 needle in it. Carb description on OSD website doesn't mention it and Nick really didn't know when I asked him. Can I assume that if the pilot jet is 75, the needle will be the good one? It seems that I would have to open the new carb to really see that (something I would like to avoid).

Thanks.

I have picked parts up from Nick at OSD a few times. He's a great Guy! He let me take a part one time when his credit card reader would not work. " Just send me a check "

He was definitely of service! Should I simply throw the carb in as is?

The price was definitely good. About half of the price than a carb from the dealer.

I would just install it. Will need the low speed screw adjusted to get a smooth idle. Then the idle speed screw for a good idle speed. I gave you the procedure with air box off about 10 posts ago. I bought a used carb for my problem child Ski 13. A few adjustments and they fight over who get to ride it! Save the carb. Might consider having someone here look at it. A spare can be a good thing too.

Since the engine is new, I have the feeling that the carb will be adjusted close to factory/manual values. I guess I will know very fast if the old carb was causing this unsteady acceleration. Thanks.

Hello again!

My new carb came in this week from OSD parts (see above). The dealer is going to install it on Monday or Tuesday (they are happy that I got one and they want to install it themselves). Here in Canada, the list price was 800.00$ CDN for the carb and with shipping, US exchange rate and customs, I had a brand new one at my door for 400.00$ CDN from the U.S.A. (so half price). The dealer was surprised how fast I had gotten the carb too (like three days after shipping). USPS and Canada Post are surprisingly swift and my tracking number worked until the package was arrived at my door (some kind on inter postal services tracking number).

I really hope this will fix my slightly "lean condition" as in the meantime, we had to adjust choke lever and the ls screw to more richer but still, I had to endure the ski jumping from 20 mph to 30 and vice-versa and slow acceleration from idle (but if I pulled the choke a bit, it would jump). At the beginning, I was always checking my spark plugs temperature to make sure the engine was not too hot (which wasn't the case at all: I could touch the plugs with my fingers right going WOT for several minutes). Anyway, the engine is under warranty (as the dealer job). Ordering the carb was my idea of hoping to fix the issue. The machine rocks, but not to my taste and not as well as before the engine replacement. And my old carb had been opened at least twice so I thought it would be better to buy a new one. The only other thing I could see would be timing but yet, I think I would be having bigger issues. Same thing with an engine that would leak but with the new carb, I will rule out the carb for sure.

Here are the pictures of the new carb. I helped me a lot figuring what is waht even if there a a few things I am not sure about...

I will barely have the time to test it because it will get colder here very soon (last week was out of ordinary with temperatures in the 80s every day).

Good luck I hope this fixes all of your issues. These machines are easy to fall in love with when everything is working as it should.

As I just did.. Carbs were my issue as well.. What a difference a "normally functioning" fuel system can make..
