Oil cooler?

I'm really hoping you all can help me out :)
Two days ago I was out in the middle of the lake enjoying a 90 degree day, working on my tan, pulling some friends around on the wake board.... then all of a sudden I get an overheat alarm. I shut the boat down, take one look inside and said it's time to go home. I had oil/water mix overflowing from the coolant reservoir. Took it home and let it sit for the night. Next day after work first thing I did was check the oil.... low, not even reading on stick. I top it off and turn the boat on. Runs, sounds right, normal. It didn't run long but I checked the oil again to see if I could see water in it... looked clean. Pulled spark plugs, looked good there as well. Drained the "coolant" which looked more like melted chocolate ice cream, drained the oil... looks clean to me. So.... I'm no mechanic but I do have a shit load of common sense.... do I replace the oil cooler? That I already have off the boat? (because I wanted to check o rings) is the oil cooler the issue? And since they apparently don't make that part anymore what do I use to replace it? Help... I'm a fish out of water :(

since you had low oil level in the engine and now its in the coolant! most likely cause head gasket, coolant pump seals.
could be the oil cooler, pressure test the coolant system, check the seals on both coolant pump and cooler.

Thank you for your reply! I have been talking to my auto mechanics, they seem to think it all happened too quick for it to be a head gasket. But we are definitely not ruling it out, I just want to eliminate any other possibilities. There is not a lot of information out there about the oil coolers (& replacement parts) or having oil in the coolant with no other issues. (Like having water in oil as well)
Any suggestions will be appreciated!
 
Have you done a compression check yet? Pete63 is correct when he recommends you pressure test the cooling system. Test the 2 and let us know what you find.
 
I had the oil cooler tested today. Definitely junk on the inside. The orings looked ok. So I'm back at my original question of what do I replace it with? They don't make the part anymore and I guess no one is making a replacement?? I would rather not buy a used one, is that my only option?
 
I might have a good used one if you decide to go that route. I'll have to find it and pressure test it first.

i'm still leaning towards head gasket or water pump. check your oil filter, if the engine was overheating the water in the oil will evaporate leaving only glycol in the oil. this hard to see when mixed with oil but will crush or collapse the oil filter. so open your filter and check for distortion.
