Oil change - I need a tip

my recently purchased '03 GTI LE RFI has a full tank of gas of unknown age and a full tank of "partial-synthetic" oil put in by the previous owner. I want to get rid of the gas and change the oil to XP-S. I've done this in the past on a '97 GSX without a problem, siphon tube in - pumped out. On this GTI I cannot get the siphon tube to pass. The diagram in the shop manual doesn't show anything in the way.... any tips?

pull hose from bottom of res, have bucket/bottle to catch it..
