what starters will all fit my 89?

There are quite a few used starters on ebay and some new ones even one with higher torque supposedly. Can anyone tell me for what engines/years are the starters interchangeable? I keep finding starters that will fit a 580 or 587 white engine for sale, will these be compatible with my (i think its a 587) yellow engine?

The yellow one looks right. The white one looks a little off. I would go for the yellow one. I need one as well! So EMT369 how much you want for it? Or I might take the one off e-bay. Unless you go for it seapoo. Let me know. Now that I look closely at that yellow starter it seems pretty rustic around the teeth.

I bought the yellow one on ebay for 42.50 with shipping. Lets hope it works! I seen some new ones on ebay for 62.00 plus shipping. But, I'm cheap so i bought this one cause I could bargain on it. Good luck with yours. I will be pulling mine out tonight and taking a look at it.

I recently purchased a 89 SP that I am pretty sure sat outside uncovered with water in it for at least one and maybe two wisconsin winters. Is there any chance that something got ruined. So far the only testing I've done with it is turning the engine over without spark plugs in since my starter is weak and barely turns it over with them in. It did shoot a bunch of water out the back during the first couple of engine rotations. What areas should I look at to see if anything was ruined by freezing water? I am totally new on this scene so we may need to start withe basics. I am very mechanically inclined, but I have only even so much as touched a jet ski as of last sunday.

Yah, possibly, an inner wire rusted/fell off the tab...

wait til you get starter in and work'n, then check compression. Any evidence that frozen water broke/cracked anything, more than likely will show up in compression test...

Well, it depends.

Depends on alot of things. Some parts it could break, and others not. Water in hoses, no problem. Water in the water jacket, well, that is another story.
I think that you could have 3 jet skis, in Wisconsin, NOT winterized, and one is ruined, one has a few broken parts, and another is not hurt at all.

And it could depend on the ANGLE that they are parked at, and the way they were pulled. If one was pulled up a steep hill, it could help remove water from certain parts, and allow it to drain.

I say it depends on alot of factors, that may be beyond your control.
So, fix, buy, or borrow a starter, and dump some motor oil and gas down the plug holes, and get her turning over good.
Then, compression check it.
Then, if all is good, thoroughly clean out the fuel system, and her her running, and properly winterized.

I don't think anybody can tell you the answer to this for 100% certain. You may just get lucky!

Thanks for all the great advice and help guys! Just one more question as this is my first ski. If I do all of these things and actually get it to run, what procedure is there to follow to run it on land? I assume I hook a hose up but how long can I run it this way, and is this bad for it?

Yeah, there is a procedure. But, I only know the one for mine, not yours.

I know it does heat up the bearings, so you are not s'posed to do it for more than just a few minutes.

But, I'd play it safe, and try it in the water, on the trailer, but back it in deep, and tie it down good.

Just my opinion. The forum is not responsible for my hair brained thoughts!

Also, I have a starter on the way and should have it hopefully by this weekend. I will then do a conmpression test and hopefully run it. Also Nate, it was on the trailer leaning with the front of the ski downhill, and when I turned it over it shot a bunch of water out the back of the ski, so I assume this water was in there for years and over the winter as well.

lol your hair brained thoughts! Thats pretty good, so its not good for the bearings in the engine or the propulsion system when running on dry land?

Well I pulled mine out and the teeth that connect to the fly wheel look clean but the outer casing is really rusted. Also the case that surrounds the teeth where you insert the starter was really rusty but like i said the actual teeth and parts around it looked really good. I have a friend who said he will rebuild mine for 50 bucks so im going to take it to him tommorro. Good luck on that starter you just bought.

Success!

So, I got my starter removed tonight, finally found the time. I am surprised it was able to turn the engine over at all. When I spin it with my hand it feels gritty and turns hard and kind of wedges like bearings or bushings are wore out and it has play in it from side to side. Looks like water was inside of it and its rusty. Below are some pics of my starter and all the "extra parts" I found in the bottom of my ski. Also what is that black box with holes for that is not attached to the bottom of the hull like the other one?

Here are a few more pics of my ski. Those stones and sand scare me, it also looks like there is a piece of black rubber missing where the turbine? spins against. Will this affect how fast my ski can move without repair? I also found out that all 4 of my engine mounts are completely in half and are doing nothing at all. Where can they be purchased and for about how much?

Running.......

If you got a flush connection, you can run it for 5 or 10 minutes. You don't have a shaft seal, so no water needed to cool it. The bearings in the pump housing are cooled and lubricated by oil.

You can actually start it without water, if you just want to test it after you put the starter on. But only for a few seconds. If it tries to run off with you, pull the choke. This will starve the engine for air.

Well I took my starter apart last night and there were large pieces of broken magnet stuck between the 4 large magnets and they were wedging and preventing it from spinning freely. My brushes look worn but should not be causing the problem. My main concern is that it looks like at the brushes end of the starter there is supposed to be a bearing for it to spin in but it is completely rusted and seized tight and acting as a bushing. After cleaning everything and putting it back together it now spins nicely and much more quietly also. Is that supposed to be a bearing that is able to spin or is it just simply a bushing? If that is normal I may just throw it back in the ski tonight and see if it cranks over with the pugs installed.

Take snipers word over mine.

I read that somewhere, here, but it must have applied to another type of ski.

My bad.

And, with magnets falling out of the starter, I'd probably look for another starter. I doubt you could get them all glued in right!

Well I brought my starter to the shop and they called me back and said that it looks like a brand new starter! So yay for that, but now i need to find out why it wont turn! I cleaned out the area where the starter goes and also around the fly wheel. I dunno but i will repost when i check it this afternoon. At least you know that its your starter that was bad. Im back to the drawing board!

The four main magnets are intact and well honestly I coundlt see where any of those chunks even came from. Once removed there is no more "wedging" when spinning it by hand. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a bearing at the brushes end of the starter assembly?
