Anyone know what size the jet pump nose cone set screw is? I'm putting together a DIY leak tester and I can't figure out what size the threads are. I went to the local hardware store and it looks like a metric fine thread but it didn't match up to any of the thread size testers.

Ok thanks! that would explain why it didn't match up to anything metric.

Yep, even the allen drive is SAE on that.

LOL, I made one for home use and it's in my pocket right now. I was looking for a compound gauge to thread on the "T" so I could measure vacuum too and forgot all about it.

It's actually 10x1.0t. (Tapered metric threads) But, in the USA... you will never find it.

BUT.... 1/8 NPT is SO close... it will work. The thread pitch is almost exact. The only real diff, is that a 1/8npt plug will drop in a little deeper. (because of the tapper)

Sportster... the reason your plug may have an imperial hex, is that it may have been replaced by a previous owner.

Regardless... it will work without an issue.

Toolanddiemaker: Over the years, I've almost found that a pressure check is not needed. If the pump shaft is in good shape, and you replaced the seal, and the rear O-ring... they will seal. If you find that the shaft is warn.... the seal will leak slightly.

I'm not saying to NOT do it.... but if the parts look good... it will be sealed. If I can assume you are a tooling guy... I'm sure you know what you are looking at.

With that said... if you are using questionable parts.... a pressure test will let you know if it's working or not.

Thanks for the advise Dr Honda! I ended up picking up a 1/8 Npt nylon fitting with a barb and it does fit but as you stated the threads don't compleatly match up and yes you are correct I'm using questionable parts my shafts and seals are a little worn and that is why I'm doing the leak test plus this is my first pump rebuild so I don't want to screw it up! I plan on getting a bearing rebuild kit but I thought I could salvage the shafts they have slight wear from the seals and micrometer out around .0007 were the seals ride but if I get a leak I will order new shafts.

I found that even the slightest of wear on the shafts in the seal area cause water ingestion. Especially is there is any axial run out of the bearings and shaft.
If you have the bearing seal tool from SeaDoo, then you would be able to press/set the depth of the needle bearings and seals correctly.

Yes there is axial runout about .003 to .004 and yes I plan on either making or buying the bearing pressing tool and unfortunately buying new shafts. I thought they were prob bad they have nice shiny somewhat deep sighns of wear right were the seals ride I think you just confimed my suspicions Thanks to all on this forum you are all a lot of help!!!!!!

I naturally had assumed it's normal/acceptable to find some water in the lube considering the operating circumstances, similarly with the fuel pump diaphragm. I don't think my pump had ever been serviced before I tore into it the first time, not surprised to hear the threads are actually metric, that makes sense. Funny thing is, out of my handful of allen bits the one that fit best was SAE so that had me thinking the threads are NPT.

My pressure leak check is fine, I like to do this just prior to filling the cavity to make sure the cone o-ring doesn't leak. I haven't tried to vacuum check the cavity yet but plan to, most of my tools are kept at the marina and of course I couldn't locate a vacuum gauge lying around here till it was all back together.

I humbly realize none of this matters to anyone at this point.

it`s all good brotha! we all like to hear how other members do their work!

I found the 1/8 NPT schrader valve at McMaster carr. after I made one from an old tire valve, lol...

I`ll check next time but i`m thinking I also use an SAE allen bit to service the plug.

well this is the one most important reason to use "GOOD" pump oil. I`ve been surprised myself from water intrusion and no additional wear or failure from running good lube. It did it`s job very well! Amsoil!!!

I know you use lower unit lube and I`m sure it has great properties as well... I would just check the weight of the gear lube your using. 75W90 is good...

I`ve run seaPoo jet pump oil and that smelled awfully burnt in such a short time...

on the yamaha 155 and seapoo 155 pumps with roller axial load bearings, (4Tec pumps) I`d mix a slurry of Amsoil (Blue) water proof/resistant grease and Amsoil severe gear lube until it was a consistency of (hard to describe) thick Tomato soup, lol...

whereas these pumps originally had grease in them. This worked great and the life expectancy was extended.

most of the time water can come in thru the tail cone O ring bc it was pinched or sealant wasn`t applied. 518 works best around the O ring/flange.

I noticed a lot of hardened gunk all over the o ring that the pre owner had rebuild does 518 cause that? I guess it realy doesn't matter considering you put a new o ring on anyways, but man I had to realy scrape that gunk off! I ended up getting some mobile one 75/90 recommended by one of the guys on the forum much cheaper than seapoo oil and smells better to!

518 is read in color and it is an anerobic sealant. it does dry hard eventually, but in most cases you can use a pick or fingernail to just pop it off. it doesnt bond to the plastic like an epoxy would...

and yes, def use a new O ring. I know others reuse and i`ll leave it at that...lol...

when ordering the parts, just grab a couple extra O rings...

Ok thanks will do I think the orings for the cone are coming with bearing kit I just bought from watercraft superstore but if not I will order some I definitely don't plan on using they old ones! I also ordered some new impeller shafts just to be safe, man this new hobby of mine is expensive I hope the wife doesn't get the credit card bill before I do 2 pump rebuilds = about 500.00 in parts! I wish I could go back in time and stop myself from planning out in to shallow of water oh we'll live and learn first time boat owners blues lol!!!

WSS I believe has the same owners as SBT. But comparison shop and see if there are any price differences.

I was on the boat we have now with the PO back in 2008, he (the PO) was heading across the bay and following a GPS, I happen to look down and see the bottom of the shallow part of the bay and yell to him do not let off the throttles, we made it thru the shoals, but I`m sure it sucked in some shells and sand for sure...

one time, I was testing my ski that had just been repaired under warranty from a seapoo dealer, and the engine cut out from a sensor. I refired the ski, the current was swift and the water was dark enough that I could not see and I was floating just over a rock pile, guess what, when the engine kicked over, it sucked in rocks into my brand new Skat Modded 155mm pump with a stainless wear ring and destroyed my new 14\20 impeller... yeah so shyt happens... oh and the ski was not fixed, back to the stealership! I had to let them attempt to repair the ski for warranty...

long long story...

Wow! that sucks sorry to hear that but it does make me feel a little better that im not alone in this!! SBT is who sent me over to watercraft superstore i guess its there sister company seems to have the same prices anyway SBT could only rework one of my impellers so they told me i could get new ones there so i just ordered all my stuff from WS.

This all happened to me my fourth time out at devils lake in mi I underestimated the depth of the water and floored it long story short it sounded like a handfull of rocks in a blender so i cut they engines and from there it just cavitated luckily i was close to the loading dock and limped back on one engine LESSON LEARNED!!!

Thanks for your story!

hahahaha me to, lesson learned.

I had well over 5K in mods on my GTXsc, aftermarket intercooler, self made (AN fittings and russel hose) separate cooling system for the intercooler, recalibrated washer in the pump for water flow, custom Autometer liquid filled boost gauge in the mirror pod, 2005 215HP ECU, piggy back knock sensor harness, upgraded SC, custom one off exhaust pipe made By Rotax racing, R&D sponsons, Skat modded pump, custom air intake, custom graphics, finger throttle, UMI steering, ODI grips, Solas 14\20 impeller and a skat 16\21 impeller, etc etc etc it was a fun ski, very stable, but suffered the dreaded supercharger clutch washer destruction, a rebuild became emminent... lol...

the next year SeaPoo came out with a slighty quicker RXT with a few mods, intake, prop and grate my buddy beat me by 1 mph... dam...

then I switched camps to yamaha and had a nice modded GP1300R, still love the 2 stroke power band...!!!

Man that sounds like a bad a*# ski hopefully I can educate myself enough to do some mods,I have a buddy that used to race skis a few years back so hopefully he can give some insight. Awesome mods sounds like you got this down to a science!

hahahaha, that was years ago before I lost my mind!:lols:

I think you would like this! and this, and this hahahahaha... (some past/current projects)
It never ends, I just have to put my glasses on now to see what I`m doing... ooof!

now the challenger, FJ and frontier keep me busy enough... ok, time for a nap...lol

Dude you have some sweet toys!!! Ahh engine porn sweet! Love that FJ thats hardcore nice snorkle,I had a 2004 blazer Zr2 lifted, with four offraod lights on top of a coustom roof rack man I miss that truck! Now I pull the boat with the family truckster/Chevy equinox " damn kids"! That ski has some sweet coustom grafix!

Nice pics thanks for showing them! I plan on loosing my mind as soon as the kids are older( coustom jeep, and I want to fix up an old ski) you have officially motivated me thanks! I think?

hahahah motivation is expensive, hahaha!:lols::cheers:
Thanks.
The people we met showing that Torino, and the doors it opened were priceless. as you can see the scan of the polaroid!:lols:
that`s way before internet for me :lols: Internet was out, I just wasn`t tech savy and have most of the old days in photo`s...

Just enjoy everyday bro, enjoy time with the family, time moves along quickly...

The FJ is my DD and is more tame now that she see more street duty living in the south. Back in NJ, I was literally across the road from the Pines/trails and we went as often as we liked with the dogs. Currently it`s back on stock suspension with air bags in the rear coils for towing the yacht! lol...
If you have the time , grab a few beers or coffee and have a read, The FJ`s story.:D

Wow!!!! Great job on your build! I realy like that light bar you defiantly didn't cut any corners that was a clean job. It's nice to see others with passion to mod. I wish I would have seen your thread when I had my truck, wiring the lights and tying them into the roof rack was a nightmare! Funny I had the t bar hurst shifter on one of my trucks love that brushed aluiminum look but it was cold as heck to hold onto in the winter being a manual.

Oh yea almost forgot that critter stopper was sick! You could prob hit a deer a week and never get a scratch!!! Good call on ditching the tint looks cool but it will make you a statey magnet,I prob got pulled over a dozen times because of mine they tend to frown apon 5% up here in mi.

I checked out some of your boat pics as well do you pull the motors regularly in the winter to work on them? I'm a little gunshy when it comes to engines but I'm hoping to pull one of mine and rebuild this winter.

I have a buddy just like you he's slowed down a little because of kids and work but he's built a jeep from the ground up as well as a 94 camero, bikes and one boat you remind me of him on acount of your attention to detail. Anyway awesome job it's been an entertaining and inspiring night reading that thread thanks for showing!!

living in our past place I kept the boat outside and covered and it was just easier keeping them in the garage protected from the elements. I knew I was going to rework a few things during the storage time and they are easy to remove, provided you have the alignment tool when reinstalling them...

I recently found a list of cars/trucks/vans that we`ve had/modded or shown, and it is maniacal!:lols:
some of my favorites were:
67 Galaxie 500 2dr slope roof
69 Merc Cougar
74 SS nova
70 -71 Fairlane 351C
and top of the list: 72 Mark Martin replica Gran Torino Sport.

I`d fill up a whole page if I wrote down all the DD`s that were modded...:D;)

Thanks!

Ha, now I understand why my bearing cone fill plug looks just like an 1/8" NPT.... The funny thing is, it didn't look like it was tapered and I can't say for sure my impeller is factory since it doesn't look like some others that were used on the same boat. The 1995 IPL doesn't provide the detail.

2001 Sportster:

12 211500001 PIPE PLUG SOCKET 1/8-27 NPT 1 7.12

1995 Sportster:

14 211500001 PIPE PLUG SOCKET 1 7.12

1971 Falcon? I don't recall those, will have to see if I can find a photo. We used to drive a '71 Torino GT all over the place.

I put some calipers on the set screw after dr Honda told us what it was and yep it's tapered and definatly metric man is that 1-8 27 close though, my plastic set screw with the barb that is 1/8-27 ntp for the pressure tester fits great.
