noise when engaging propeller on I/O drive

Removed propeller, splines are fine. Will post a new video without the propeller on where hte noise going into reverse is easier to hear. Waiting for the wife to put on her makeup....

Hi John,

I've got a Mercruiser Alpha 1 and mine just kinda goes klunk when I put it in gear. Does it behave normally with the prop on in the water? I believe Sportster-2001-951C-Stock is the most knowledgeable guy on the forum on Mercruiser's, maybe he can give his opinion.

Lou,
In the water it does just clunk into Forward, but makes kind of a brief grinding noise going to Reverse, like it cant find the gear for a couple seconds. It's been doing it for so long and I've kind of ignored it for so long that I couldn't remember if it always did it or not (I don't think so). The last few years I've only used the boat a handful of times so thinking I'm going to sell it but wanted to take care of the problem if indeed there is one before I sold it to someone.

Yea, I think mine does the same thing, it's probably normal. We're going to the lake tomorrow and I'll check it out. You wouldn't want to trade out that vengeance prop. for a new black max, I could throw in some boot. :drool5:

I have a brand new Black Max sitting in the boat. The original owner must have swapped it out when he bought the boat. :)

Yea, definitely let me know if yours does the same thing in reverse. Like I say, it's been doing it for so long I really can't remember if it always did it and I just didn't pay attention to it at first.

I did some quick browsing of the classifieds for a pontoon and was shocked by how much they are going for. There ain't much to a pontoon, can't see how they can cost so much.

We went to a boat show last winter, talk about sticker shock, the new pontoons were $50,000.00 and up. John I really don't think you're old enough for a pontoon, have you looked at deck boats?

So anyway, back to the prop. swap, how about if I throw in my first born son?

Lou

Have not investigated deck boats but that would be an option. I had been thinking I could sell the Rinker and get a pontoon a few years old for the same money BUT that was before I got the sticker shock.

I don't know Lou, that's an awful shiny prop, I may have to hold out for a swap that includes Sheridan :)

You know, Tony might not want to admit it, but the Islandia is pretty much the same thing as a deck boat. You've pretty much got the platform of a pontoon boat with the advantage of a planning Vee hull.

You know I don't think Sheridan is gonna like P-burg winters, how about a loan for the summer?

Jet propelled pontoon boat, I like it!

I don't have your stamina Lou. 20 minutes with Sheridan would probably take me 6 months to recover. Put her on a bus and I'll send her back next week with the vengeance prop.

Here you go just so you don't forget.

Well John I really don't know if this is going to be of any help. We went to the lake today and when I put the boat in reverse there's an little bit of a tick and then it goes in reverse, in forward no tick it just goes in forward. I keep the boat on a lift so the only way I could really test it is in the water.

Have you shipped the prop yet?

Lou

Well I guess I got good news and bad news Lou. I posted the video on a mercruiser forum and the guys there say the clicking noise is normal BUT they claim that even though I ran the engine without water for only 30 seconds that I most likely damaged the sea water pump impeller and I need to open up the lower end and replace it and maybe some seals. Now I've never had my boat in the ocean so I can't figure how any seals might a git in there. Guess there kinda like them damn kudos.

I put the boat in the water today and it ran fine but they are insisting it's a ticking time bomb. Sooo I guess I'll be pulling the boat back out of the water.... What sucks is I got the ear muffs for running the boat on the hose but didn't think I needed them for that short period.

Rubber impellers will take only a small amount of abuse. They sell others that are much more durable. I think neoprene is one style. In the military world we changed out ever rubber impeller and thermostat assembly.

Joe, do you agree that the impeller could have been damaged that quickly and that I need to tear open the drive?

If it was dry, then yes, it could be damaged. Outboard rubber impellers don't handle dry spinning well as at all.

You can go for it. Worst case it crumbles when you out and about. It could go the rest of the season. The neoprene ones allow for short term dry running. Because we ran so fast and often the entire boat was out of the water we made the change.

Run the boat in the water at cruising speed for 10-15 minutes, if the water temp. stays normal I wouldn't bother rebuilding the pump. If you decide you need to re-build the water pump here's a few tips.

Been there, done that. Actually it's not a terrible job, you might want to get help removing and re-installing the lower unit. I serviced the gimbell bearing last year and re-built the water pump while I was in there. There's some pretty good videos on youtube. I also have a (dare I say) a Claymer's manual that comes in pretty handy. You'll need the gasket kit for the outdrive and the outdrive water pump rebuild kit, about $35.00 for both kits.

This is very important, don't ask me how I know, be sure the boat is in forward when you remove the outdrive, if it's not it can be a real bitch to get the linkage re-aligned. Also when you go the the dealership for parts be sure to take the engine serial number. If your boat is a 91 or newer you probably have an alpha 1, generation 2 drive.

Lou

I'll second the "forward" as well. Major time saver.

thanks guys, Good Advice. I had it out yesterday and I'm pretty sure the temp held at 160. I'll take it for another cruise when I get a chance and verify. I have so many projects I'm trying to do around here I'd like to put off rebuilding the pump for awhile if possible. I did watch a video and if don't look like a bad job and one of the merc guys pointed me to an online service manual. Lou you should receive the prop in the mail tomorrow.

Once you start working on Merc outdrives you'll appreciate the simplicity of a SeaDoo.

BTW, Sheridan coming to your place for a summer visit, she'll be at the bus station this afternoon. You might want to warn your wife, she ain't much of a house keeper, but she sure can "cook".

Hmmm....prop in the mail tomorrow. Is that like "free beer tomorrow"?

Lou

No, just the 30 seconds to take the video

First of all, NEVER crank or start the motor without water muffs attached and water running, it will destroy the rubber water pump impeller!

If your engine runs hot now, this is why. 180* on the gauge is approaching too hot, keep a close eye on it.

As far as a repeating clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk and no(or delayed) engagement goes when going into gear (FWD or REV), most likely your shift cable linkage needs adjustment or the shift cable is binding(most often seen in saltwater use, rare in freshwater).
