No Beep on Post but Everything else seems OK, no start though

I have been reading a lot of threads in this troubleshooting forum and think I might be on to something and wondered if anyone can confirm. My ground cable came off my battery while riding. Jetski dies. Makes sense. Find battery is about to be dead so I replace it. Now I get no beep when I apply the key but it cranks, it has great spark (new plugs), it is getting gas, it has compression, it just will not start for ANYTHING. I saw the multimeter test for bad posts way deep in another thread and have one but really am not sure how to set the meter to test continuity. I can do most everything else but that meter I have never mastered. Anyway, I will go try to figure it out but does this seem reasonable that maybe I shorted out the post when the battery cable worked its way loose?

I don't think you did anything to the post...but you could have caused a problem with your MPEM,(Multi Purpose Electronic Module). Check the fuse in the MPEM box to see if it blew. I would check all the fuses if you can.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Fuses OK, still no start

I checked 2 fuses in the rear electrical and three fuses in the front electrical box. All good. I knew it could not be that easy. Again, it seems to want to start, I smell gas, the starter is cranking away, but no starting. I just detached the post electrical and am not searching for the instructions to test that. Any other thoughts? Did I miss any fuses? Thanks.

If you are getting spark at the spark plugs while the engine is cranking I don't see how it could be anything to do with your MPEM or electrical system. More than likely the engine is flooded with to much gas. After you removed the plugs after trying to start the ski do are the bottom of the plugs really wet?

I have a 96 XP and sometimes when I place the lanyard on the post I don't always hear the beeps either. Maybe only 50% of the time but it still cranks over and starts whether the beeps happen or not.

She is not flooded

Thanks for the note but this has been going on for over a week. I have eliminated flooding as a possibility. There is gas on the plugs but they are not drenched. I even left the plugs out for a few hours in the direct sun to dry things out. I am thinking timing maybe. But what baffles me is that it was running just fine until the negative battery cable came off the battery while in flight. That was the event that started all of this. And I can find nothing wrong except no longer getting any beeps when putting the key on the post (was always getting them before) and no start. My multimeter is dead so I have to go get a new one and test the post. Maybe that is it.

Here are some test to try when you get your multi meter.

Engine start/stop switch verification;
Disconnect the Yellow/Red wire of the start/stop switch. Using an ohmmeter, connect test probes to the Yellow/Red wire and to ground. Measure resistance, it must be an open circuit (switch is normally open). Depress and hold switch, the ohmmeter should read close to “0” ohm.

Safety Lanyard Switch Verification;
If 2 short beeps are not heard when installing the safety lanyard, disconnect the switch wires.
Safety lanyard removed;
connect the test probes to switch Black and Black/Yellow wires. It’s an open circuit, there should be no continuity.
Connect one test probe to the White/Gray wire and the other test probe to the switch terminal. Measure resistance, it should be “0” ohm. Connect one test probe to the Black wire and the other test probe to the switch ring. Measure resistance, it must be close to “0” ohm.
Safety lanyard on switch; connect the probes to switch Black and Black /Yellow wires. Measure resistance, it must be “0” ohm.
Timer Verification;
The timer is integrated into the MPEM. Always confirm that the fuses are in good condition. To confirm operation of timer, remove the safety lanyard from switch. After 5 seconds delay, depress start/stop button once. The timer should stay on for 33 seconds (for example, the gauge(s) will be activated) and than turn off.

I hope this helps, keep us posted.
