I recently picked up a 95 XP to restore in NJ. The ski came with an 11-year-old registration and bill of sale from Connecticut with no title. I would like to get a new title and register the ski, but I don't know where to start. Any help is greatly appreciated.

In most states the bill of sale is enough to get a watercraft registered. I can't speak specifically for NJ but you should just go I to the appropriate place and ask them what you need to do. Here in CO you go the parks and wildlife office

Not a legal expert but....so long as the OLD registration and the Bill of Sale are in the same "seller's" name...you shouldn't have a problem. In NY, you take your paperwork to the DMV and you register the PWC ...their are no titles to PWC's in NY....the registration is "TRANSFERABLE" and acts like the Title document.

Many many moons ago - 27 years, I bought a ski in Ohio (a no title state) and had a hellava time getting it registered in NY, even though I had a Bill of Sale and the registration from Ohio. NYSDMV is a PITA, but I got through it eventually. The trailer was a whole 'nother story.....had to register that one as a "homemade" trailer since I had / there was no paperwork on it (I was young and naive back then).

I've done it with just a bill of sale and no registration.

It was my first ski ever purchased and the guy literally pulled out a piece of printer paper and wrote the sale cost, his name, my name, dates, and a place to sign.

I called the parks and wildlife office to confirm this was good enough and she said "as long as it has the watercrafts serial number on it".

I found the whole pretty silly but no complaints. It was easier than the dmv and very low stress

Really depends on your state and without knowing what NJ requirements are we are just guessing.

In California after about 7-10 years of no activity they are purged out of the system and you just fill out paperwork to put it in your name including statement of facts. You don’t need any old title or registration and there’s no vin verification required.

On the flip side if it’s in the system, without a valid title or signatures from the last legal owner you are dead in the water and the vehicle is stuck in limbo. It can’t be legally bought, sold or transferred because as far as the state is concerned it still is owned by the last titled owner and they have not released it.

Luckily, I have a bill of sale and a registration all signed by the previous owner. The only scary part is that it was all written up in 2012...

Thank you by the way to everyone for their advice.

The only issue I could see is if the bill of sale and title list someone else as the buyer.
If it in the system you will also be responsible for the 12 years of past registration and any late fees.

Did this 2 years ago with my 2 DI's. Just printed a bill of sale out from the NJ DMV website, filled it out and brought it over to the DMV. I had no problem except the woman helping me didn't know how to get it started because they weren't new. They got it done for me but if you goto a DMV that down the shore they go through this all the time and the transaction will be flawless.....
