Just purchased a new Sea-Doo and currently trying to figure out where is the best place to ride close to the Houston area? Heard about Lake Conroe and Lake Somerville, but not really sure of the details of where to go exactly! Any good pointers?

Both are good lakes. Conroe has a lot more traffic and can get pretty choppy. Skiing is difficult because of this but its a fun place. Sommerville has less traffic and chop, is glass in the morning.

Conroe is surrounded by private property and as far as I know there is no camping area although there is a really cool bar on the lake called Papa's on the lake. Food, beer, nice pool.

Somerville has 2 parks to camp with sites ranging from full rv hookups to primitive camping. Good swimming, sandy beaches with a steady slope so its no problem to keep your boat near the shore at night.

Conroe is more for partying and tearing up the lake, somerville is good for skiing and family outings.

DUH!!!

You are from Houston, and not thinking about ...

LAKE HOUSTON!!!

We haunt lake houston almost every weekend. Great boating, very little crowds except on the busiest of holiday weekends.

Free launching at Deussen park on the south end. Pay launch at Huffman, and I think Kingwood. Might be a free launch on the river on the north end where 59 crosses the river. Used to be, not sure if it is there anymore. (edit 5/9/10--there is no launch on the river at 59. Went there to fish this weekend and it is all blocked to traffic)

Skiing and wakeboarding is best in the cove just south of the railroad bridge and just north of the dam, on those days when there is a south or south-east wind, which is most of the time for us. Also good skiing just north along the 1960 bridge and the bridge blocks the south wind.

Now if you want to camp, you will have to go to Livingston, which has some parks on the lake, but the stumps and weeds are horrible.

Somerville has some really good camping, especially near the dam at Somerville marina. You can pull the boat right up onto the shore and camp out like this.

Try Canyon Lake

Its three hours away, but Canyon Lake is a great place to ride. By now you probably found Lake Conroe is a busy place on weekends.

If you ever want to take a long trip, check out Lake Amistad (Del Rio). Its a National Park for a reason! Great riding and awe-inspiring scenery, but make sure you're ready for safety inspections (the state game wardens and federal rangers are out in force).
