First let me start by saying hello to everyone and look forward to talking with all..now for my issue, I just picked up boat this week so I am new to all this:thumbsup:the guy I purchased from said that last time he took boat out it locked up so decided to sell. I took a chance on it once I got it home I tried to start and wala fired right up but smoked a lot.then I check compression 1 side was 60 psi the other was 90 can that be right?i searched and found that correct is 135-150. Would it even start if top end was that bad or did I not check it right?i pulled plug wires off and put throttle to wide open and cranked for few seconds on each cylinder .

Thank you
Joe

You tested it correctly..

When we see numbers like that, we suggest getting another gauge and see what the numbers are.

However,,, in your case even if the high one was say 135, the low cylinder is 30 psi lower which takes it to 105. The rule is, cylinders need to be within 10% of each other.

Still worth doing the re-test with another gauge just to confirm things.

The smoke can be as simple as a crank seal allowing oil to weep by during long sittings (as long as it is no a 951 engine). If so, it isn't an uncommon issue. But until you re-confirm the compression, I wouldn't go too much further.

I forgot to mention that it's a 951 Rotax carbureted motor.I am going to try test with another gauge to make sure but if it is that low would it still start? When I did test and I'm plugged the wires was I supposed to ground amount because I didn't some say I should some say it don't matter?if compression is that low do I just rebuild the top end or I have the whole motor redone. I appreciate the help .

Thanks
Joe

When I just read back to myself realized Spell checked changed some of my words smh lol sorry about that.

Battery charged real good(not charging while connected to boat)? Did you put any oil in the spark plug holes?

Time to strip the head off and take a look at the cylinder, top end rebuild is probable however depending on why it is low on compression it could be in need of a full rebuild.

With some luck you will get away with a top end rebuild however you need to find out why it has failed before putting it back into service or you could be back where you started.

I put new battery in when I got it home, I did not put oil down plug. I started to take motor out and as I was disconnecting starter wire and the ground wire I found a bunch of metal chunks under motor and then I saw a hole in the block the size of a golf ball. The whole side of case was blown apart I'm amazed that this thing even started up as easy as it did I can actually see the crank.I guess that would explain the black water on bottom of hull under motor and the oil light on smh.

Thanks again
Joe

I honestly have never looked for a new motor, I have only had my motor rebuilt, that was for $1049. Does your quoted price include a core charge? If so than that is probably a good deal if it is from a reputable seller. If it is just a swap then your turnaround time will be quicker than a rebuild of your current block.

Where is it from?

Being that my motor case is blown apart there is no core so that's for motor with no core charge. I did a lot of research and these motors are hard to find. Saw sbt reviews along with a few others and out of every one I went with fox valley motorsports not one bad review nice guys there. I sent them an email yesterday and they ended up calling me back on the Sunday which was great I explained my situation and my tight deadline.I ended up getting the motor for 1550 and its being shipped out today I should have it by Thursday.
Can't ask for better service than that so we'll see .

Thanks
Joe

1550 is a good deal for a properly rebuilt engine with no core. Does it come with the RAVE valves? If you are going to be using your original rave valves you may need to look into having them clearenced for the new engine. If the rebuilder chose to increase the bore size slightly for the new pistons, then you may have interference issues...

I am not professing to be a professional on these engines, but that one thing does stick in my mind. Some one else can chime in with more knowledge as to whether you will have trouble or not.

Happy Boating!

And do not count your current block out yet.... you may want to look into some of the rebuilders that have been mentioned on this site. They can do some good work on fixing holes in the aluminum cases. You may have a salvagable item that you could turn around and have a back up engine. There are a few people on the forum that have multiple skis and boats that use the same 951. They have an extra on hand just in case. That way if one blows they only lose a day or two of seasonal fun. Mid summer is the worst time to try and have an engine rebuilt.. In most cases you might as well count the rest of the season out.

I had the Sea Doo Engine shop out of Pennsylvania rebuild my 951. They did not have to repair my cases so i cannot comment on that work, but they do mention this work on their website.

Sorry been awhile. So I ended up have a motor built from a local shop (Pwc engines) with a 2 year no fault warranty. I put motor in boat today and started hooking everything up I'm hopeing to prime the motor and start it up tomorrow.leaving for our lake house fri for a week and hope to be ready by then.

Ready to sell this pos boat already, sorry just very frustrated and spent a ton of money on it. Had new motor built I put in boat now does not start I have no spark.i checked all grounds and replaced stator still nothing when I put key in I get 2 beeps and cranks fine just no spark? Any ideas??before I pulled motor boat started but old motor had hole in it that's why replaced.. Any help and ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you
Joe

How do you know that you are getting no spark normally if you take the spark plugs out then he'll come back up to the spark plug cable if you crank the engine you will see spark coming out of the spark plugs

Try timing the spark plug wires about quarter inch. You may have pulled the metal clip from the wires while pulling the engine. Also make sure battery is fully charged.
