Hello from Massachusetts,

My name is Jay, a friend of mine gave me a 1997 SeaDoo GS this weekend that has been sitting for a while. Its in rough shape. The last time it ran was 2 years ago, he said he let a friend use it and he killed the starter. He thinks if I put a starter in it, it should be good to go. I'll be posting in the tech support section soon.....IM SURE. LOL

What have I gotten myself into.......

Once you get it to at least crank, clean the gas tank and baffle, then change all the fuel hoses and fuel selector switch. Pull the carbs and clean them good and/or rebuild. I had so much green crud in the system I'm surprised my 97 GTX ran when I bought it.

But I wouldn't do any of this until you get the starter and see if it will crank good.

What STB said above plus, but not to be overwhelming ...

get rid of the old gas

Check the many threads here regarding the gray fuel lines; bottom line is get rid of them, good quality auto fuel line seems to work.

If you do not know the type of oil in it, replace it. Check/replace the oil lines, especially the small ones from the oil pump to the intake manifold.

The experts here recommend getting a rebuild kit for the starter vice getting a new one.

Check battery cables at both ends for corrosion/bad cables.

If the engine turns over and you can get a decent compression reading you MAY just be lucky enough to just need to do some routine maintenance, cleanup and go riding.

There are a bunch of things you can do; spend some time searching this forum and you will probably find all the answers, if not there are some real experts here willing to help ... pictures of problems are always helpful.

Welcome to the forum.

have fun,

Rod
