Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a used 2003 Seadoo jet boat and am looking for some help on a few items. I think i got it at a steal too for $3500, is that a good price? I'm not new to boating at all but this will be my first boat I will have personally owned. I'm very excited about it and looking forward to the summer!

1. First off, what is the proper way to refer to my boat?!?! I know it sounds kind of weird but I can lookup a search a number of ways and just wanted to know which is the proper way to identify it. The previous owner said the boat was a 2003 Sportster. Now there is a decal on the front that also reads Bombadier (which I thought was reserved for the PWC Seadoo line). I also know there is a 4 TEC (not sure what that is either model of the same boat)... so what exactly do I have for a boat? I believe the 4TEC is the model with the 155hp negine which I know I have the 135hp model. So what do I have...
- 2003 Seadoo Sportster LE?
- 2003 Seadoo Bombadier Sportster LE?

If my research and assumptions are correct I have a 2003 Seadoo Sportster LE with a 947 Rotax 135HP engine. Can someone please tell me I'm right?

2. Where can I find manuals for this boat? I prefer to do my own maintenance and up-keep if I know how to. In order to learn that I need to be able to read something! Does anyone know where I can find an owner's manual, show manual, parts/repair manual? Even if I have to pay a few bucks I don't mind as the boat is well worth it to me.

3. Engine Care - The previous owner said the gas is a regular 2 cycle mixture correct? Anyone know what the ratio is for that mix? Also, the boat is need of a SERIOUS cleaning. What shouls I avoid getting wet in the negine compartment when cleaning it, I'd like to just Simple Green everything and powerwash it but not sure what can & cannot get wet in there.

4. Parts? - Does anyone have any good places to pick up parts if needed. I don't mind dealing with people out of state (I'm in MA) or online but want someone I can rely on and who won't jack up the prices for a "newbie".

I appreciate all the help everyone and anyone can provide. I hope to be able to give back to the forum and community as much as I can as I leanr all about the boat and up-keep. Thank you once again.

I would refer to your boat as a 2003 Seadoo Sportser LE. These boats are manufactured by Bombardier.

You are right about your research, the LE model has the 947 with 135hp. There was also a 4tech model in 2003.

You can get the Operators Guide from the SeaDoo webpage under the owners section. If you want the shop manual you can sign up as a premium member and have access to an electonic version (pdf) of the shop manual. You would only really need to sign up for one month and download it.

Parts are cheapest online, check out the parts link on the top of the forum.

As for cleaning, I wouldn't take a pressure washer to the engine compartment, but I have never cleaned one before so maybe someone else could give you some ideas about that.

Hope this helps!

A few answers...

Hey Cnpalmer!

Congrads on the purchase of your first boat! It's a great experience and provides hours of "fun in the sun"!

I figured I'd take a crack at answering a couple of your questions, then let the resident experts do the rest.

1.) Reference
Bombardier is the name of the manufacturer (short for Bombardier Recreational Products - BRP) and Seadoo is the division - kinda like GM is to Chevy. The model you have is a Sportster and I think it's technically referred to as a "jet boat". Bombardier also owns Evinrude/Johnson, Ski-doo/Lynx, Can-Am and Rotax, along w/ Sea-doo.

3.) Engine Care - Specifically Cleaning
With any type of engine I'd say stay away from pressure/power washers if you want to clean it. I've seen too many problems arise when pressure washers are used to clean engines. Typically they're all electronic problems. I've found the best method is just to use a couple of rags and remove the dirt manually. Simple Green is a good product and I think it's even environmentally friendly. Some of the others guy may have had better luck w/ cleaning their engines - just basing this on my experiences in both auto & marine. If you decide to use it, cover all the electronics with plastic bags.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

@Matt - Thank you! You don't happen to have a link to the Seadoo page you're refering to do you?

@FWD - Thank you too! I can completely understand the marketing & labeling now. Without any documents with the boat its tough trying to figure things out.

Do either of you or anyone know if there was any significat changes between model years such as 02->03 or 03->04? Just wondering if parts and reference material might be the same when I'm looking on eBay and stuuf to buy things.
