new guy here need some advice please ... 2000 xp

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well i have been riding bikes for a long time now, i thought it was time to move to water. it hurts just as bad,but with no road rash....

here's the story... i started looking for a ski because my friend bought one. i fell in love with the look of the XP black/yellow. " it's a water bike " was my first thought. i got it this past sat. never made it home, i stopped by wal-mart bought a vest and shorts then took her out. woke up sunday and did it again, and monday too. stopped by the seadoo dealer monday on the way home to have the hours checked 54.14 the tech guy check the compression too FRONT:100 psi REAR: 134 psi. he told me the carbs need to be rebuilt. can some one tell me why? so i called a friend that knowes people and said " hi who do you know that works on jet skis " he sent me to a guy that builds jet boats. this guy told me to take the ski back to the man i got it from to see if i could get my money back because the carbs need to be redone andt the top end need to be rebuilt.his words were " this ski has been rode hard and put up wet" i need some help here guys i have no clue what to do !!!!

951cc two stroke

I wouldn't take the ski back and try to get your money back. It's very possible that your riding did some or all of the damage. If you like the ski, fix it, top end $300 and a carb cleaning will be free if you do the work. Those xps are notorious for water injestion which will cause low compression and piston slap.

I'd feel fortunate if I were you that you caught it early, should be a very routine top end job and you'll end up with a like new running 50 hr ski.

how much did you pay for it? if you got it cheap and the hull and the engine turns its worth keeping it. thats how i got my ski.. got it cheap needed some minor work and now i;m glad i bought it. rotax engines are warriors they are tough if you maintain them regularly

i paid $2700 ( nada said it's worth 3800 ) for the ski and trailor. i would love to do the work myself, but i am a 4 stroke motorcycle guy.i know nothing about skis or two srtoke motors. and how do you get a top end job for $ 300.

You got a good deal on it, so putting a little money in it shouldn't bother you too much. A top end job for $300 assumes you do all the wrenching yourself and if you work on 4 stroke motors, a 2 stroke will be a walk in the park, they are not too complicated.

First, get a manual, you can get them here off this site through premium membership, tear it down like the manual tells you to remove the cylinder and pistons(be careful not to drop any needle bearings into the motor when you remove the pistons, count them to make sure you get them all). Buy .5mm over top end piston kit, lots of places and brands to choose from, WSM works fine for stock motors in my opinion but others will disagree I'm sure, for around $200. Send pistons and cylinder to get bored by 2 stroke machine shop specialist for $70 plus shipping both ways. Reassemble like manual tells you to, you'll be around $300. I'd plan on about 3-4 hours to remove pistons and cylinders your first time and the same to put back together. You'll want to remove carbs and go through them at the same time since you'll have easy access to them.

People here will help if you have questions and there are few tricks that make it easier like leaving the carbs hanging while you tighten the back pipe nut. Dealers normally charge $1200 to $1500 for a top end job, a smaller shop may do it for $750.

No, I haven't had any issues with my 01, but it only has 16.5 hours on it and I baby it(I'm old!!). It is exactly the same as your 2000 except for the colors. 99-02 were all the same, 98 had some minor differences like a single coil system 951. 97 (which is what I'm riding in my avatar) had the 800 motor in it. I attached a pic of my 2001.

The 951 is a great motor in my opinion, only real issue is the water injestion and the xp hull makes it worse with all that water sloshing around in there. I've actually owned lots of XPs, pretty much all years. I normally buy them with issues, fix and resell.

Timmyboy has a point, you certainly could rebuild the whole motor for peace of mind, it actually would be about $350-$400 more with shipping charges since you'll still have a $100 in cylinder boring. Plan on about $650 for a total DIY rebuild.

here's the site where i got my stuff cheap and i mean cheaper than ebay or other places. seadoo-parts.net and i got my engine bored at a auto machine shop. just bring your cylinder and new pistons and they can do it, they charged me 160 to install 2 sleeves and bore and hone them to piston size

yes you should take it out to be able to insert the pistons into the cylinders i strongly recommend you take out the engine with some help if you have any. its possible to insert the cylinders and new pistons while still in hull but you will have a hard time. trust me i've done it before many times. your back will hurt real bad if you work on it inside

btw remember if you think about inserting the cylinders while still in hull... make sure you line up the piston rings with the pins they are usually facing toward the left of the hull and are hard to line up while you insert the cylinders while engine still in block..my advise ...pull it out

I understand what ultra is saying and probably true for a seasoned veteran, but I respectfully disagree, I wouldn't pull the motor if I were you. Sure, a top end job is easier when the motor is out like everything else sitting on a work bench in front of you, but pulling the motor involves getting it back in and properly aligned, more things to disassemble and more things to reassemble which is more things that can be messed up.
