OK guys, you have help me make a decision to buy a 2002 Utopia 205 M2 240 EFI Mercury boat and it is now in the garage and paid for...:hurray:

Now the boat is near mint and has every option imaginable on it and has been maintained rigously by previous original owner according to him. Just needs waxed and ready for water according to him. I however am one of those guys who way overdoes maintanence and want to continue to do so I this boat. Now what do I need to do, new here and will keep searching but really cant find anything to help so your input would be great. I'll try to get some pics of it up in next couple of days and really excited to get it on the water hopefully as soon as this weekend. Be normal boat owner up till now with outboards/bassboats/pontoons/ and bowriders but never even had a jet ski so now that I have a huge jet ski want to do everything by the book and look for those problems lucking in and around the boat and fix them before me and the wife and 3 kids hit the summer lake for the season. So please chime in and let me know. Thanks in advance and God Bless.

AARON!!!!

Sorry for the delay, I've had my house up for sale and have been kept away by realtors for showings.

Aaron has a 185 no??? Craig

Yep, or should say Did.

He does. But it is really the same thing.

Yep.

Halfshaft5, if you're unsure of what has been done recently on the boat, I would change the drive fluids, spark plugs, and fuel filters. Also have a good look at the alternator belt and check the water level in the battery and have it load tested. Other than that give it a good cleaning and have fun on the water.

OK plugs have been changed, the battery is good, put a new optima in there Saturday, belt is fine, no cracking for chunking and looks nice. All the lines on the motor look good. I picked up some plugs and will change those tonight but the drive fliuds, fill me in there or is there a thread on changing them and what to use and what do I need to buy. I did take it out saturday and ran 1/2 tank of fuel and seafoam thru it and ran great with no issues, it was a long 1 1/2 trip, took the family to eat down river and just cruised at about 35 to 40 mph. I want to do all fluids now so lead and guide me and I appreciate all the help. Thanks and God Bless.

BTW I am in Spring City, Tn. Little east of Percy Priest.

Drive Fluids

There are two areas in the drive-line to service, the Stator near the back, and the Gear Case near the front.

Their are two ways to service the stator. The purists will tell you you have to remove it from the boat in order to make sure you get all the oil changed, but I just remove the drain and fill plugs, then stick a long hose down the drain hole to get any remaining fluid. Be sure to put thread sealer on the plugs before you reinstall them. Next for the gear case pull both plugs. To speed the drain process I blow in the vent hole (the hole closest to the side of the pump) very gently with some compressed air, or it can take forever to get the oil out. To refill it you will need a gear oil pump available at any marine supply store for under 15 bucks. It threads on the top of a one liter bottle. Just hold the spout tight against the fill hole (closest to the center) and pump until oil starts to come out the fill plug. The quickly replace the drain/fill plug and then the vent plug after the exes oil stops draining. The only thing to watch out for here, is the drain plugs both have plastic washers on them. Be sure not to loose or damage them. Both the gear case and the stator take Mercury High Performance gear oil. 550ml in the stator and around 800 in the gear case.

I added a couple of pictures to this thread of the drain/fill plugs. http://seadooforum.com/showthread.php?t=11289&highlight=stator+oil

Thanks Aaron, what a great write up, will pick up some fluid tonight and knock everything else out tonight so she is ready to go this coming weekend and hopefully it will stay in the 80's all week and maybe warm the water up enough to get the wakeboard out, just getting over a knee injury on a snowboard so its about time to punish it on the water.....lol..... Thanks again Aaron and to all that chimed in. Thanks and God Bless

BTW.... Hydro-turf is the way to go right, so is it better to order direct on here like the sticky says or Ebay has a vendor that sells the kit for like $389 so something like that. Thanks again and I always like supporting Forum sponsors regaurdless which forum it is so let me know....

Hydro turf is the best shiznit on the market. Beats carpet by a lot. Everyone has nothing but good things to say. You can order direct from them, mention this site to save 15%. I dont trust that the ebay stuff is genuine and also the discounted price they give us is a bargain.

Even better, buy the actual Mercury lube pump. In addition to threading into the top of the bottle, it threads directly into the hole in the jetdrive gearcase. No more "holding tight" - it holds itself, and it's WAY less messy.

IIRC the Mercury lube pump is no more than the same $15. Buy it once, use it forever.

Hope this helps!

Here are detailed instructions...

Here are detailed instructions on winterizing the 240EFI:

http://articles.richardhartman.net/jetboat/mercury240efiwinterization.htm

...and your M2 jetdrive:

These are standard operations for winterizing, but obviously you can do them whenever necessary - such as just after purchasing a boat with unknown history [grin].

Hope this helps!

Thanks WAjetboating, appreciate the help on that, will do everything in the two writeups. Thanks and God Bless

I wouldn't winterize the engine!

Thanks WAjetboating, appreciate the help on that, will do everything in the two writeups.

I wouldn't winterize the engine right now, obviously. You're just coming into the new season. And it sounds like you've already replaced the two external fuel filters and the spark plugs (good job).

The instructions for the M2 jetdrive should get you through that process. Then, do everything in both of the writeups this fall when getting ready to tuck the boat away for the winter.

As an aside: I'm just completing a mini-overhaul on my 2001 240EFI. This included tearing down the induction manifold, servicing the fuel injectors, cleaning/replacing the two INTERNAL fuel filters that nobody ever talks about, etc. Based on what I saw, I'd say this should be done every 3-4 years for a boat that sees average use. Mine was overdue.

When I write up the procedure for this I'll post a note in this forum.

Thanks guys, all is done, just snaped the bolt for the steering hiemjoint when taking it out, didn't see the backing nut, but prankly it took nothing to break it so go ta new one for $10 with everything and its on now. I think all is well now, might do a dual battery setup with a isolater for a battery for my stereo but jury still out on that. Might wait till the winter to do it. Need to do some reuhpolstering on the back seats but again might be good to do that later in the winter. So far everything is perfect with the boat and all is good. Love this forum, and getting ready to place a order for some hydroturf. Going to get the molded diamond in a granite color I think, what do you guys think, too plain, I want the blue camo but I really think it will be too busy for the boat. Thanks again guys and as always God bless
Michael

Glad it's all coming together!

I'd run it for a few hours, then check the lubes front and rear. Opening the drain/fill plug (center) on the jetdrive will release a few drops if you leave the air plug (offset) alone. Opening the top plug on the stator will allow you to "dip" a clean screwdriver or other tool in there to get a sample (can be done through the steering nozzle, no disassembly required).

Put each sample separately in clean baby food jars, then hold each up to the sun or other strong light source and look "through" it for contamination, particles, etc. If clean, you should be good to go until winterization.

Also, buy some Seafoam and use it in every tank. EVERY tank. 1/2 to 1.0 ounce per gallon of fuel. This being a two stroke engine, you need to think about carbon buildup. Seaform does wonders at keeping that out of your enigne. You can buy it in gallon cans at NAPA.

Finally, use at least 89 octane fuel (preferably 91). There is conflicting data on the proper octane to use. Seadoo's manual says 87 is enough. The Seadoo sticker next to the fill tube on my boat says 89. But Mercury's engine service manual says 91, and I can indeed tell the difference. The extra money for premium fuel is a cheap insurance policy for your engine, and around here at least our premium grade fuels don't have ethanol - a HUGE bonus. (Regular has 10%, midgrade has 5%, and premium has none at all.)

Good luck and report back!

All is still good...still have not done the dual battery or hydro-turf yet...winter projects. Did replace the wakeboard tower with a monster tower and wow so much nicer. Seems to be running like a champ. all in all loving the boat..its great. thanks guys and have a great season.
