I just purchased an aluminum replacement lock nut for the reverse bucket cable, but while I was looking at what's currently there, I noticed my steering cable has been "modified" where it punches through the pump mount.

I'm hoping whats under the blob of sealant isn't damaged. Before I dig into this and what's going on, I would like for someone to show me what should be there.

Here's what I currently have going on:

its just a lock nut on the cable shaft with a seal. looks like the previous owner had a leak! shouldnt be a problem unless the cable shaft has excess movement.
look up the parts list at the top of this forum web page and you can see the diagram of the cable and parts.

I've replaced a few ski steering cables and they had some other pieces that the boats clearly do not. I wasn't sure if they were the same until it dawned on me to check the service manual. I was afraid some of the internal seals were missing and a new cable is roughly $350+.

Looks like it's simply a threaded rod with washers and nuts holding it in place. I'll try to clean up this mess this winter.
