Recently bought a used speedster 150.

Test drove it for half an hour... everything ran fine.

Took it out on the first outing, ran great for about an hour. Then on one of the takeoffs developed a squealing noise - so I figured it has to be a driveshaft bearing or something in the pump.

Dropped it at a local boat shop - they say the pump is fine. The noise is from the engine. Engine compressions checks out fine. They want to pull the engine, then see if it's something they can replace or have to put a new engine in. I don't know anything about Rotax engines, but this sounds odd to me.

Here is a vid of the noise... you can hear two chirping sounds right at the end after the wind noise starts.

Any ideas?

Oh, otherwise the boat ran fine. Spent most of that time cruising around at 30MPH, had a couple of sprints to about 55MPH.

First, is it Supercharged or not. If so, then the Supercharger, washers mainly, is the first then to check. If it is not supercharged, then the best thing to do is remove the engine cover and take it out with a friend driving it and see if you get it to do the same problem and locate the sound.
But as for as replacing the motor, that is just a Dealer wanting to make a lot of money. Never just replace the motor because of a funny sound. IF you can not find the problem, then run it till it quits, why not of you are going to replace it anyway. Besides, may be just a small, cheap problem, but you may have to wait until it gets worse to find it.
Even if the dealer said they checked, Get under the boat, check the pump very closely, check to make sure nothing is wrapped around the shaft, nothing in the pump impeller. Check the rear of the impeller. If it just keeps getting louder and louder, I am guessing a bearing, could be one of the pump bearings. Engine bearing usually have a very high pitch squeal with the pump bearings having a lower pitch. My Yamahas would make that sound when I got a rope wrapped around the shaft. If i had to guess, I would guess a pump problem, something in the pump or a bearing going bad in the pump. Pull the pump apart, check the impeller by turning by hand, see if the problem is not the cone bearings. and check the shaft bearings where the shaft is coming out of the boat. Besides if it is not that, you can turn your wear ring around, so no loss for your time.

Hi, I ended up not leaving it at that shop 'cause their diagnosis sounded like complete BS. Took it somewhere else... the left pump had apparently leaked out all its lubricant. They replaced the pump - everything is fine.

Thanks.

Yep, just as I thought, the cone bearings. It has a simple O-ring for seals and can fail. Simple and easy to fix. And just think, if you had trusted that shop, they would have spent 3-4K replacing your engine and it would still be doing the same thing. Dealerships are the last place to take a problem. Not all are bad, just most.lol I have found that between this forum, Greenhulk dot net, PWCtoday and a few others, I can find a fix to any problem I have. The best advice is free.
