I still have an engine out of my 97 challenger 1800 from where i shipped it back to SBT for an exchange. it is suppose to get down to 30F degrees on monday night. i didn't want to winterize the boat yet because i want to test the new engine when i put it back together which should be next weekend if i don't run into any complications. do you think the engine still in the boat will be ok since it is only going to be freezing for a short period???? just wondering what you guys think i should do, thanks. and i thought i bought a year subscription for premium but i am already out, i guess it might have only been a year.

for now, I'm not familiar with the winterizing thing, (CA???), but, what if you pulled the bottom water hose off the motor, this will allow all water to drain from engine, thus nothing freezing inside???

where on the engine is that hose?? and if this is the case then why doesn't everyone just do this instead of the winterization procedure!!

I would just pour some anti freeze into the engine to remove any risk of it cracking. You don't want to lose a core or new engine over $3 worth of anti freeze.

You can also leave a 60 or 75W drop light inside the engine compartment and close it up. Just a little bit of heat will help keep it from freezing since it's just going to touch freezing at night.

Wow.......thinks like me!

It's not often I read a post where someone thinks like me but you hit the nail right on the head pincusa.

I can't advise you to use the light bulb, although I do something very similar. The reason is fire hazard. Your gas tank is just forward and if there is any vapor build up or standing fuel, you can create explosive conditions.

There is no magical hose to take off and just drain. The 947cc engine has a bottom drain hose at the magneto. I think that is what timmyboy is referring to. All the 2 cycle, Rotax engines are considered TLCS (total loss cooling system). When you pull the boat out of the water, it all gravity drains out of the boat. But, there are areas of the boat, where there are standing pockets. This is why you need to put anti-freeze in the motor. It takes several hours for water to freeze solid.

On your 787, if your worried about it, do like he said, get a cup of anti-freeze and on the engine that is still in the boat, take off the flush cap on the top part of the boat. Where the water line goes to that "T" that leads to the back of the boat, pinch it. (or take off that hose on the head, that's on the starboard side and put a short piece of hose on it with a funnel, and pour it in. I would only be concerned about the block, since it's the most important place to protect.)

If it's out of the north wind and you've got the insert and engine cover closed, and your only going to see freezing for an hour or two, I'd not worry about it...........

Thats why I frased it, in a ? way. Not to inclined on winterizing, so for me, probably hard lessoned learned, once summer came roll'n around again...

sorry for my ignorance but this is the first time i have ever messed with any winterization stuff. will i still be able to start the engine with antifreeze in it or am i going to have to drain that out too once i am ready to test the boat next week. and this seems really easy so is this considered a method good enough to last all winter??? thanks a lot

yes the engine will start with antifreeze.
As said it is an open loop system so as soon as you run it in the water or on the tap the antifreeze will be washed out!
Don't skimp on the antifreeze, use as much as you need to make sure it is mixed with any water that is still in the block or exhaust.

ok i understand now how to get the antifreeze into the engine but will that last all winter or will i need to do something else once the other engine is installed. thanks and i really appreciate your help. BTW gunsrunner do you have any probs out of your 97 challenger cause mine has been out of service longer than i have been able to use it so we are kinda thinking about selling!!!!:(

Yes i can understand how you feel, these boats are fairly high maintanance.
1 x motor
3 x starter motor
4 x new carbies
But when they run good they are so much fun!!!!:hurray:
Every time i take it to the ramp, people always come for a look and a ride if i'm in the mood.
I could have sold it 10 times in the year i have had it.:)
Have not seen another seadoo boat where i live, so it gets a lot of attension when i take it out!!
It's just the right boat for me, I have spent long time working on boats(crayfisherman for 15 years) and this is the most fun i have ever had.
Where i live people drive some expensive boats, but none get the looks that this seadoo gets. Took it to a marina the other day and docked at a jetty to have lunch, my wife and i had fun just watch people's reaction while we were eating lunch in the resturant.
We have used it for sking, tubing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, fishing and just having fun going fast and jumping waves, not many boats can accommadate all these things.

ok i i just put a lot of antifreeze through the block but i think all of it came out of the back of the boat so i guess that is what is suppose to happen!!! is this right and what else do i need to do to make sure nothing will happen over the winter?? thanks a lot guys!!!!!!!!!!!

Did not realise you where winterising, just thought you were doing it for a week.
If you have finished using it until next summer, then i would have recommended you fog the engines (inside and out) with seadoo lube and run the fuel out of the system and put fuel stablizer in the tank.
I also disconnect the batteries and put them on a charge and maintian system.
Then lube all cables and joints and repack(or replace) the trailer bearings ready for next season.
I give it a good wash with auto wash and a polish with synthetic polish and i coat all vinyl and plastic in armor oil.
I leave the hatches open for a couple of days so it can dry out properly, I put my boat cover on and store it in the shed.

I do want to just do this for a week so i do just run antifreeze through it or is it suppose to stay in there??? kinda have the same question for when i winterize for good till warm weather comes back around. What happened was i removed the "T" and put a cone directly to the block but all of the antifreeze slowly came out onto the ground. i am confused on the part of if it is suppose to run through it or do i clamp a hose to keep the block full of antifreeze. am also wondering what all products i need to buy to do the actual winterizing and when you say run the fuel out of the system how do i do that. thanks i would be lost more than i already am without you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:ack:

How you put antifreeze in is good, you need some to run out.
You just need to put enough in to replace any water left in block or exhaust, there is some spots in there that the water does not run out, when you put antifreeze in it pushes the water out and replaces it with the antifreeze, this stops the water from freezing in the block and expanding until the block cracks.
With the fuel, all you do is switch the fuel selector to off while the engines are running. This will use all the fuel up, i spray lube in just as engine is coughing and before motors stop. Do one engine at a time.
I use bombardier Lube in motors and cables.
I use a product call Inox to spray engine bay and motors (cheaper than bom lube).
I use Super Lube grease on wheel bearings and joints.
Maguiers wash and polish.
You should not let antifreeze run on ground unless it is enviro freindly!!

I sent you a pm mason and found your post. If you still have questions I'll keep an eye out to help if I can too. Sounds like you got the correct information...
