It's purple, white, and black
It started life looking like this...
1994xp.jpg

I was hoping it was a 1995 like this 1995xp.jpg so i could be of more use... since that's what is dead in my garage with low front cylinder compression. I have done a little research and so far it looks like the e-boxes for the 657 and 717 might be the same, but i have to try and confirm that... might be a few internals are different part numbers but wired the same. If that's the case i can post some pics tonight maybe.

Awesome, if you could put some pics that would be great. I greatly appreciate it. If you are able to identify each wire that would help me so much too. if not, it's ok.

So it looks from the diagram that the Solenoid lug that has all the black wires is just a common ground. It's not even part of the Starter solenoid in so far as it doesn't connect to it internally other than via the ground though the MPEM.

So to address all the black wires on the starter solenoid, there are 5 black wires that go to the lug on the Starter Solenoid (VTS Module/Ignition Coil/Starter Solenoid/Rectifier and the ground from the start/stop button), and one black wire that comes out of the stater solenoid and goes to the MPEM.

For the Starter Solenoid: The two heavy red wires go to the starter and the battery. The Black, Yellow&Red, and one light red wire go to the MPEM. The other light red wire goes through the VTS module which is mounted on the cover of the e-box and has a 15 amp fuse in it.

For the rectifier... It has a black that goes to ground(on that lug that is part of the starter solenoid) and then a Yellow and Yellow&Black that goes to the harness that goes to the engine. It also has a red wire that goes to the MPEM.

For the ignition coil....It has a black that goes to ground(on that lug that is part of the starter solenoid) and then a Black&Red wire that comes from the MPEM and splits to the Ignition Coil and then to the same wire harness that the Rectifier's Yellow and Yellow&Black go to. The final black wire from that harness goes to ground(on that lug that is part of the starter solenoid) The two heavy black wires are the spark plug wires.

For the VTS Module: The purple wire comes from the MPEM and splits twice on the e-box cover side (and once before it gets here into Purple&Tan), with one going to the VTS Module, one going to the gauge cluster(via Harness) and the other going to the up/down button (via Harness). The Green&Orange and Blue&Orange wires from the VTS Module go back to the VTS Motor. The Green&White and Blue&White wires go to the Up/Down switch in the same harness as the one purple.

The other MPEM wires:
Tan comes out and splits to Tan and Tan&Black. Tan goes to motor/thermo sensor switch. Tan&Black goes to Buzzer.
Purple&Tan split off the purple wire and goes to the buzzer.
White&Gray comes out and ends?
Red&Purple comes out and ends?
Yellow&Red (2) (i) goes to start/stop switch
(ii) goes to starter Solenoid
Black (3) (i) comes from the Safety switch
(ii) Comes from ignition coil
(iii) comes from the Starter Solenoid
Black&Yellow goes to the safety switch
Red (2) (i) one comes from the starter solenoid
(ii) One comes from the Rectifier

I am not familiar with that older style of solenoid but it looks like you are missing a connection on the other small lug next to the one with the black/white wire. The way it works is a small current circuit energizes the solenoid through the two small lugs which pulls down a big contact connecting the two big red battery cables. Since yours only has a wire connected to one side of the small circuit it probably can't close the big one.

Agreed. You should have 12v on either of the small terminals on the solenoid. Whenever you push the start button, the Black/white wire goes to ground and the sloenoid should close. Looks like you're missing a wire, which, according to the WD should be yellow w red stripe and should have 12v on it unless the 5 amp MPEM fuse is blown

Normally it would be right next to the 15A fuse on the MPEM Did this ski ever start/run since it's been in your possession. (Not trying to be a smart a either)

See if you can find a part number on the MPEM like 278-000-xxx. Something is strange with this. I see blue and green wires on your MPEM, but no where on the wiring diagram are there blue or green wires

Okay, I looked at the wiring diagram that iggy provided for the 1995 and I think what I've been thinking was the MPEM is really the VTS module. That is the one that has only one 15A fuse on it. However in your pictures I don't see another module that looks like an MPEM

Wrong info...deleted so it doesn't confuse anyone.

I can't see the picture on my phone... But that's the e-box. It has the mpem and coils and starter solenoid in it. A few other things too... Can't remember off the top of my head. Go on eBay and search for parts... You can get a idea of what you are looking at.

Oh, it has the rectifier too I think.

From what I can see, there is no MPEM in the pictures you provided. It should be right behind the solenoid where that one battery cable is. Sorry my pic is so small. I did get it off of an ebay ad. What happened to your MPEM? The module in the lid of the ebox is most definitely the VTS module. And yes, your ski should definitely have an MPEM.

attached swiped picture is what the ebox contents should look like... your mpem is mia. An aftermarket mpem should work fine.
