My 96 GTX Won't Turn Over

I just bought a 1996 Sea Doo GTX, and I knew it needed work. Honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing or what I need to do. I've never owned a jet ski before.

I bought a new battery and put it in after letting it charge for around several hours. When I try to start it, it does nothing. No noises, or clicks. The only thing I can notice is a low fuel light? on the speedometer.

If you have ANY advice I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks!

congrats on purchase....check all fuses, does it beep twice when landyyard plug'd on?, check all connects,grounds...repost on ur findings...

When I plugged the lanyyard in yesterday it beeped. But it only did that once. I've tried a couple of different times, but everytime but once, maybe nice, it has done nothing except show that I have low fuel and low oil.

I haven't had time to check the fuses today, but I did discover one fuse in the glove box. Might be a cause?

The previous owner said he was sure it needed a coil for it to work, but he didn't tell me what all he has tried to do in the mean time. So I might have my hands full on discovery what all he has disconnected. Haha.

Thanks for all the help and if you think of anything else. It would help me out. Thanks again!

96 Gtx

did you try jumping the selanoid wire's in the electrical box with the lanyard pluged in. it's the 2 red wires, jump the 2 red wire and if the starter doesn't turn over its most likely selenoid. If starter turn over not selenoid.check fuses. Keep me posted

..not quite, aritab8, if you jump the solenoid and starter kicks over, then you replace the solenoid, if it dont, then something wrong in starter assy and area
....johnny, in meantime, remove the grey shield from inside, and spark plugs, then turn the round white thing(pto), counterclockwise, see if smooth, then/also take gander at fuses, and clean the post w/ soapy water and landyard key...

if it only beeps once, either the lanyard or mpem has a problem. i see bad lanyard posts on older seadoos now and again.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'm acutally at school right now on my iPhone so today after I get home and tutor a friend I'll try some of these options. I'll repost later and let you know. Thanks again for the help. You all have given me a good starting point!

Advanced diagnostics?

When you say it only beeped once, I assume you mean, when you put the lanyard on, it had a set or one beep, just that one time.

This sounds like a problem with your post. Probably will need to be replaced. You can do this yourself. We carry them www.seadoowarehouse.com and they aren't that expensive.

You can also try the advanced diagnostic mode. With the lanyard cap off, push the start/stop button 5 times. You should hear a long beep and a short one. This signals that your in the advanced mode. Now, put your lanyard cap on. If you get another series of beeps, count them and re-post...

Okay. I've tried the advance diagnosis and it didn't work. I held the start button down without any beeps. The lights for the temp, low fuel and oil came on but no sounds. Also, i tried it with the landyard on with the same results.

Also, when I put the lanyard on it doesn't beep anymore. Not even once, but it did that before and then it would beep once or twice. It's like it's random.

I checked the fuses and all of them were good, BUT i couldn't find one of them. I found three fuses (2 5's and 1 15) in the front of the craft. The other I found where the coil is which was a 15, but I have a book that says there should be a 7.5 right next to the 15.

Thanks for your help!

hey Jon...just lookt up 96GTX on this site, and doesnt show trim/VTS system, inwhich thats the 7.5amp fuse...
When you say it beeped once, maybe twice, are referring to..."beep", or "beep,beep"..once or twice, did the guy you purchase ski from, have another seadoo, maybe gave wrong key? Have you tried, just jump'n solenoid, see if starter engages, and motor spins, or tried the turning "pto"??

He did have another water craft, but not sure what it was.

BUt no I have not tried jumping the selenoid or turning the "PTO" but like I said this is my first jet ski and I don't know a lot of what I'm doing.

What is the PTO?

1996 Gtx

I also have the same problem...1996gtx has not been started in about 5 months...now it will not turn over the fuses are good...brand new charged battery...please help

I jumped the selonoid and it turned over. So therefore it needs to be replaced correct?

Also, i jumped the selonoid and the motor turned over but would not start. I think the spark plugs need to replaced. Is there a way to test the plugs without replacing them to make sure that is the problem and not something else?

Also, it is still not beeping when I put the lanyard on.

Thanks for the help. I'm making some progress!

1996 Gtx

I performed the solenoid test by jumping the 2 red wires in the electrical box and it did engage the starter so I assume I need a new solenoid. When I first plugged in the lanyard, and tried starting, the engine turned over for a brief moment then after that when I would push the start button I would only get a clunk noise, like the battery was dead. Does this sound like a solenoid problem? Could someone please advise?

Rite on Jon/Headache...
Varify you both have good battery first. atleast we know motor aint seized.
Jonny...heck w/ spark for now, gotta get motor turned by start/stop button. Its possible button is bad along w/ beeper, inwhich get one those at autozone(10buks). Snipe/Karl has checkout list on continuity/resistence at button...
Headache, need to find if battery is good/bad. Hook your vehicle up to it, without it running, and hit button, if motor turns, bad battery..just a click, then solenoid...

So you think I need to replace the start button? Also, if the beeper is bad do I need to worry about it right now? Because my speedometer doesn't work at the moment either I don't think and I was just going to replace things like that later.

So the plan is to replace the start button and see what that does and then go from there? My battery should be good. I bought it earlier this week.
