Mpem testing

Depending on your model, the shop manual may give some test procedures for the MPEM. It may list some resistance measurements between certain leads that may not guarantee the MPEM is working correctly. If the ski has DESS it also lists beep codes for self tests that the MPEM preforms when it powers up. There may also be a procedure to go into an advanced self diagnostic mode that mainly checks the DESS (at least on a 96 GTX). I think that when a ski with DESS powers up and gives the 2 beeps and lights up the gauges as described in the manual (assuming the gauges are working) there is a good chance the MPEM is working correctly. I have read in the forum that there are shops that test MPEMs (like Westside Powersports) and equipment is available that is capable of programming and possibly testing MPEMs but I do not have experience with either.

Thanks for the reply. Its a 2004 GTI LE RFI. No life with key on (is dess). since ive posted this ive gone down a rabbit hole and have come to the same conclusion. Probably have to send it to someone or find a local shop thatll test these.

You should verify a couple of things before sending the MPEM for testing. All the fuses on the MPEM and in the rear electrical box are good. Also check that the MPEM is getting 12V and ground when the key is on the post. The rear electical box has a cut-off relay that supplies the 12V to the MPEM that looks like it is activated when the key is installed.

all fuses are good i checked continuity not just visual inspection.
there is only one other fuse on top of the metal plate seen in fist pic #13 and its good.
I don't have a rear electrical box that i know of.
Which is the cut off relay.
There are two starter relays per this diagram(8 & 11). Is one mislabeled or ?elec.png0_0.png

Sorry. I looked at the GTI RFI schematic instead of the GTI LE RFI (p. 798 of the shop manual). It is probably #11 in your picture and has a 20A fuse in it the the black arrow points to. Look at the schematic and check the voltages, especially that 12V comes out on the red/purple wire that goes to the MPEM.
On a side note I had a friend ask me to take a look at his ski that did nothing when the key was installed. He said he thought it was the start button which needed to be pressed very hard. I checked that the battery voltagewas ok and saw the cover button on the start key was cracked and agreed the start button failed. His regular mechanic looked at it and said a battery connection was loose and tightened it and the ski responded when the key was on the post and the start button pressed. Just something you should check if you didn't already.

yeah... checked all connections , fuses, dess post is good key is good(checked continuity). I don't think its just the start button bec theres no beep with initial placement of key(although at this point it wouldn't surprise me if the button is bad as well). just pushing start button without key should show displays and it doesn't do that either actually found a nest behind the gauge area, and partially chewed wires that i repaired, went through the rest of the electrical and it was all in tact. . Either the key somehow got deprogrammed, is wrong key, or mpem is bad. Ill check that red /purple wire for 12v tomorrow.

1997 Speedster (purchased used, was told FOB needs programming, not the case, electrical issues)
I am having a similar issue. and trying to go through everything before replacing or rigging the MPEM.
No gauges, no lights when start is pressed or key is on... i get no beeps when start is pressed and it sounds like a relay clicks once on the MPEM and lasts 33 seconds (like it should) then clicks again/OFF... BUT, if i put the key on i get get repetitive beeps that dont stop... MPEM sounds like the relay is kicking for each... all fuses good on MPEM, voltage is read from the top of each fuse too... have tested the heat sensors and get a constant beep (which it is supposed to do)... i am testing everything everywhere, which is time consuming... i think i have found an issue but have to diagnose further... Seems like there is a short in the nav circuit... all blue wires on gauges have continuity with ground (and i dont think they should), both leads on bow light have continuity also and they share/branch power... so have to hunt that down.... I think i am going to disconnect everything, test the harness, and then work from the MPEM box back out.
i am hoping some good advice comes to this thread for the members above and myself! Thanks in advance

there is a 'sticky' (thread at top) for MPEM diagnostics on this forum... Maybe run through that for initial and see what is going on... I havent had a moment or good weather to jump back out and work on mine.
