Mpem repair '97 GS/GTI -Solved! see photos

I've got a '97 GTI and a '97 GS which is nice for swapping parts when it comes to troubleshooting.
Narrowed it down to the mpem on my GS and after reading up on replacing the diode, I ordered some up and have it out of the casing and ready to dig into.
I'm hoping someone who's done this on this particular mpem can tell me where that diode for the 5 amp fuse is precisely located so I can avoid digging around too much.

I've attached a photo of my mpem type for reference.

Thanks in advance!

Fixed my mpem!

Well, I found the bad diode. Ordered a pack of 4 of them off ebay by searching for "motorola MR2535L". Got all 4 for 9 bucks plus about 4 bucks shipping.

Soldered it in and it's good to go again! Just gotta seal it back up now.
Thought I'd share a couple photos. The first one shows the location before removing the plastic outer cover. To remove the cover, I just ran an exacto around the edges on the back side and then popped it off. I used a combination of a dremel-type grinder and exacto-knife and needle nose pliers to chip away at the black potting compound to get at the diode.
Hope this helps someone else!

This should be a sticky, it sounds like a common problem. Thanks to this post i have just saved myself $900 AU. When i rang the Seadoo sealer they told me they had 1 left in all of Australia. It was located in Victoria and i'm over in WA.So a big thank you mate for this post as i had little luck on the WA forums.

Diodes...

Yes, this is a common problem with mpem's that pop the 5 amp fuse. This usually happens from shorting the mpem, normally from jump startin with a outside power source.

If I understood this correctly when I was talking with all things custom, the diode is designed to step down the 12 volt power to 5 volts and is for making sure the direction of flow is one way. Works kinda like a check valve.

I was going to tell you but it seems you already found out. For other mpems, the easiest way to find it? It's the first component off the 5 amp fuse as you get into the mpem.

I will make this a sticky for a little while, to see how many hits the thread gets. If we have a lot of members who find this valuable information, I'll leave it indef.

Good work but better work when you can actually post the pictures. This is YOUR thread so please, check back with it now and then to help answer questions to members who are wanting to save a couple bucks themselves in performing this work. I'm sure, others won't find it as easy and will be looking up to you for some guidance.

Great work!!!....

I took photos as i was cutting the mpem out of its case and of chipping the black staff out and down to the diode so i will put them up this weekend.:hurray:

What symptoms one might expect that would lead you to the conclusion it was this particular diode?
Does the problem affect other mpems?

This diode is like a valve, it only lets voltage through in one direction. So when you hit the starter and then release as the engine starts it stops the sudden surge back lash going backwards through your MPEM and frying it. If you have jump started it from any sort of running vehicle your will over load this diode and it will fry. This will result in the 5amp fuse blowing straight away when you put a new fuse in.Do not put a larger fuse in as this will fry other components in the MPEM.
hope this helps
BJ

I will add, if you need to jump start your jet ski you can, but dont have the other vehicle or ski / boat running when you do.

does anyone know the specs of the mr2535l diode? or is there any other diode that would work? maybe one at radioshack? cause i cant find the mr2535l anywhere.
thanks

MR2535L Diode

OK this diode is avalable here. oempartsinc@earthlink.net let them no you are after the MR2535L and she will send you a price. It is a simple job to replace if you can solder. GREAT CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN DIGGING OUT THE BLACK SEALANT.
Good luck.
BJ

thanks for all the help i have a seadoo gti 2000 with the same problem,5 amp fuse blow up everytime, happens more if i conect the magneto statis plug, everytime i conect the 5 amp fuse the stator plug had to be disconected, your advice gave me a big help thank willito:hurray:

it might not be the mpem thats bad. Could be the rectifier or metal shavings in the stator assy. Disconnect both the red and yellow wires from the rectifier, if she still pops, the nthe mpem is bad, if stops pop'n w/ red wire unplugged, replace rectifier, if stops pop'n with yellows disconnected, then stator to blame.

well i disconect the rectifier and it still keep blowing my 5 amp fuse i check out the stator for shaveings or particules look normal right now,my mpem seems to be the problem but my machine was never jumped with any power sorce,i always charge my battery out of the machine ,can this happens becuz now am confused and dont know what step to take now ,please someone tell me what to do next att willito

BorderPatrol... That pic of the diod.. did you just cut a hole through the case at that spot... or did you open the whole MPEM and find the diod? Im thinking since we know where the culprit is.. we can just open up a hole there instead of opening the whold case.

If the whole case... shere do you start to cut it open?

Also, when you soldered the diod.. did you remove it completely then solder it to the board.. or can it just be cut off and attached ?

Finally.. can this diod not be found anywhere else? Radio Shack???

Anyone who might have answers... dont hesitate to jump in!

how to open your mpem

if your mpem looks alike as the one showned ok i open my mpem useing a dremel with a cutting disk ,after i removed the plastic i found myself with a rubber moldind i removed this very carefully, take your time to remove the rubber,i removed it with a flat screwdriver carefully ,then when you finally see the bad diode in the back side of your mpen remove the rubber too ,but very carefully dont damage the board after you done this procedure you are ready to remove the bad diode, you must request the diodes in the mentioned link ,radio shack dont have this diode and i think you will lose your time looking for one ,just order if you dont have a paypal acount ,do what i did i told a friend who had one to order them for me ,then when you have your new diodes solder them to your board ,when you finishes this procedure fill the holes in your mpem with silicon rubber sealant the one that you use in a car use black silicon sealant looks better ,then install the mpem to your machine conect your key or larnyard until you hear 2 beeps then start your motor ,it should start fine remember to conect your water hose to flush your machine, and more answers contact me ok att willito
