Been waiting for notification from my agency on where I would be going. Just found out it is Miami.

Still unknown as to when as the US Government needs to find the money to move us.

Sooo, I'll be looking to rent a crash pad with a garage for my toys.

Welcome to sunny South Florida.

Ill help you put more time on your skis.
What/Where are you looking for.

I may be able to help you narrow it down?

Congratulations, on the move. As to the money I thought when the govt. needs more money they just print more money, shouldn't be a problem.

The town of my office is Sunrise FL.

It gets tricky,,, In a few days my wife is transferring to Jacksonville FL for three years. I will be flying out of MIA five-days a week. So I will want a crash pad but not a hole. I have a tandem trailer with two skis and a Honda bike as well. So, I need a garage with a 2-car door as the trailer is 8.5 feet wide.

We plan on getting a better/nicer place closer to where she will be working and move all but my essentials to "her" house.

I am open to any information you can provide.

I always thought that that was how it worked. Got an education from a VERY smart man on why we can't do that. And,,,, here we are doing exactly that and killing the value of our money... Heck of a system.

It could be nearly two-years before the move. I MUST have PCS (Permanent Change of Station) order before I am allowed to move. Once they have the money to fund the PCS transfers for 275 people they will cut the paperwork allowing you to move. So,,, they are saying as late as February 2016.

If, and I think it is a BIG if, they get funds earlier they will ask for volunteers that want to move early. Due to my wife transferring to Jacksonville in four-days from now, I will be raising my hand high if they look for volunteers to move early.

It depends on what/where your stationed.

MIA has CC station that's located south near inter coastal waterway.
But living close to ocean gets $$ but so does travel time.

PM details if you want but Miami is big and traffic varies morning VS afternoon.

Kevin,

I would prefer that you find a place on the beach, that way we can visit you when we come to south FL in January. Don't worry we won't stay an more than a couple of weeks, and we won't eat much. Be sure the liquor cabinet is stocked when we get there.

That is my intention as well. One of my co-workers is planning on buying his retirement home. Within his plan it will have a 3-car garage and a few spare rooms. I get a garage and a room for "cheap" rent.

We are very early in the process. But if this holds true it would work out great for me as I can't make concrete plans for retirement just yet.

sounds like thinks are looking up for ya a bit there Joe, good luck with the move and such just be sure to show us those big fish ya catch off ya ski when you get there.

Sunrise is quite a way from Miami and more Ft. Lauderdale area. Which is fine because it is somewhat more affordable up in Broward county over Dade, there was a time when Broward was less crime ridden than Dade but those days are long gone, like Miami Vice days gone.

The big feature in the Sunrise area is the Arena off the Sawgrass Expressway. I have a friend that lives in the Wilton Manor area, while older, is somewhat affordable, she purchased a waterfront home with intercoastal access for 300K. Which for waterfront down there is reasonable.

I do not know Broward and Dade counties very well, I know just enough to get by. I have some friends down there, if you end up down there post up and I can relay some info your way.

My office put out an official request ask "who wants to relocate earlier than the scheduled date..."

That would be me,,, I think they are testing the waters kind if thing. But irbid a good sign.

I'll make room in my garage for your skis

To be honest, not yet. I'd be working out of the MIA and Lauderdale airport. Is there a happy medium between them.

Kinda two polar opposites.
FTL airport is north north of MIA and as far east.
MIA is middle south and central to all highways leading in to airport so commuting to MIA is worse than FTL depending on location.

Ideally theres nothing off the highway(I-95 North or South) to stay safe and be able to go to FTL or MIA in ~30 mins.

If you get place east of 95 the commute is worse b/c everyone heading to highway first to go North / South or West.

If you go more inland say west of turnpike (dividing line) in miami or broward commute South is still worse VS North.

Anything in west miami or broward (I-75 and 826 highways) the living communities are better and you get more in some cases.
The commute is longer of course but it depends on your schedule.
If you get grave yard shifts you have nothing to worry about. 9-5 job its ~1hr to work.

There are nice condos on the inter-coastal that may suite your needs but working b/w FTL and MIA airport pick wisely location.
There are only so many bridges that cross inter-coastal to get you from one side to the other.
Bridges are slow to open/close.

Hope this helps and I didn't confuse you too much.
If you open google map "satellite view" with the highways I gave you as reference you can see area you have to cover and see if its residential vs commerce

Good info. Thank you. After talking to others closer to MIA I where we would be.

Yip,

So ignore everything above.
Your close to little Havana where you can have full breakfast for 3 bucks and complete dinners for 5-6 bucks.

You can be on the other North side of 836 and be in Hialeah(older hispanic area not to expensive home vs condo)

Or be on the South side of 836 and be in little Havana. ? some areas and mix of houses, condos , apartments.

If you go a little more south and west you have Westchester area of Miami. Better than South side of 836 and more homes to pick from.

You wouldn't want to be past (south) of 40th street(aka Bird rd)off 826. Traffic is horrible in that section.

You still have intercoastal living east of 836 near port and CC station but you have to fight bridge traffic everyday.
Your'll be close to Star / Palm island along with Watson island. Thats where the stars live.

Peferect area to keep and ride ski.
Look up moument Island in Miami.

Fun times await.........

Well, I would defiantly warn the city of Miami, and maybe even south FL. :reddevil:

Lou

Lou. I'll take that under consideration. LOL. Even worse. There are 6 from my present office headed there. Some are even more arrogant than me. Can you imagine ???

I'm moving 4 months sooner than the next guy. Then the other 4 are in 2016. So my plan is, rent for 6 months. The other guy plans on buying his "retirement home." Wants 3 car garage and around 4000 sq feet. Once he does so, he wants me to rent from him. SOOO, we will see.

I hope the coworker buying his retirement home works out for you. Miami is so expensive. Tiny studios in South Beach can be $3,000 a month. It's hard to find homes , even small ones with garage space that is affordable to rent yet not in a very bad neighborhood. You don't get a kitchen or bedroom let alone a garage. Just stay away from " renters paradise " apartment finder company. They are total scam artists and have bad reviews up the wazoo online to prove it. If you wanted to forgo the garage you could keep your toys at a marina but they are hard to get into. The ones that have spaces are about $300 a month per ski. Haulover is $160 a month per ski, a little more if you have a trailer to store there too but you have to call daily the last week of the month to see if a spot has opened ( no waiting list ) When you are ready to hit the water in Miami, hit up the Miami ride threads :) Good luck! I moved down from Upstate NY a few yrs ago and love it in Miami :)
