Doc - I should have put off the purchase regardless of the deal. On a personal note, my Mom lost her battle with cancer last Monday & her services were Thursday. I know that I wasn't focused on the actual deal at hand, I just needed to do something to take my mind off things.

Not a good move in the long run....

Sorry to hear about that. Please except my condolences.

I understand about trying to occupy your mind. When my Grandmother passed, I stayed home, and work on an axle swap in my jeep. Didn't get much done on it... but it kept me occupied.

Thank you, Sir. I, too, wish to offer you my condolences.

Well, maybe my luck is changing. The seller on the '98 GTX Limited can't meet until Saturday.

Pros:
He is due north of where I will be renegotiating my contract with the '00 GTI seller.

If they take back the '00, I can head straight up the interstate, test the '98, possibly purchase & head home.

The weather is supposd to be in the mid 60's (instead of mid 50's today).

Cons:
If things don't go well with the seller of the '00, I end up pulling a trailer on the way to test the '98. If I purchase, I have to make a couple extra trips to get all the equipment home.

Why is it when the Pros out weigh the Cons, the Cons usually win?

Well, turns out we have "prepaid legal" through the wife's job. I talked to an attorney and he said if they don't cooperate it sounds like a very winnable case.

Either way, I hope to have a rideable ski that I can be proud of tomorrow night & I'm sure I will need some help keepin' her goin'.

I even made a double ground strap in your honor.

Ground both plugwires
Remove both plugs
3 or 4 hot revolutions; close?

Yes... but do it with an open throttle.

Also... do it with the engine cold. If you are going to take it out for a test ride... I would do it after the ride. That way, you know that all of the extra storage, and 2-stroke oil is purged out. (oil on the rings can give you a false high reading)

Good luck, and post some pics.

True story:

I drive to the dealership yesterday morning to have the compression checked. Shop foreman, salesman & myself are standing there in a very tense situation. Test with their tester & the foreman says "we did lie; it has 150 lbs" - I see it for myself....

We put my tester on - 75 lbs. I agree that the problem must be with my equipment. Still very tense but we call the deal good.

I hop in the truck, do a quick search for Autozone and there is one 4 blocks away. I drive there (busiest Autozone I've ever been in) and explain that my tester (bought 2 weeks earlier) is defective & get an exchange. I go to the parking lot, use the replacement tool and - 30 lbs.... Now I'm starting to get angry.

I throw the tool in my toolbox & start on my way to go look at Seadoo #2, the '98 GTX Limited. On the way I see an O'Reilly store so I pull in and rent a tool from them. This tester pulls 110 lbs. Better, but still not what I had just seen on the dealership's gear. I decide that these may not be quality tools although they sell them everyday for around $40. Continue to Seadoo #2.

I meet the seller's wife at a boat ramp, give the ski a visual inspection and decide to lake test it. I'm wading in 43 deg water an the machine starts easily. I let it warm up a bit before getting out of reach of the dock. All seems well. I head out on the lake and run for about 15 minutes; accelerate, decelerate, idle, manuever, check the reverse: all good. I had brought my GPS with me & had cleared the max speed. I never did go WOT for long due my lack of experience riding a ski. If I lost my glasses it would be bad.... My GPS recorded just over 50 mph. This seemed good enough for me. I negotiate the deal over the phone and purchase the ski for $1900.

I stopped at NAPA on the way home & bought another tester... The original ski tests 140 lbs, the GTX reads 135 lbs. I think it's going to be OK.

What a day.

So... the $1k ski is good then. Glad to hear it. :hurray:

Can't say that I own an AutoZone gauge... but I know I have a Harbor Freight gauge as my beater (the one that gets dropped, and is in the lake tool box)... and it give me basically the same numbers as my Snap-on. I think I got it on sale for $9.

POST SOME PICS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, the compression is good. The dealer used starting fluid to get her to fire off. I could sure use some guidance in giving her the once over as I try & breathe life into her again..............

I just sent Terri (Poppy) an email to see what I needed to do to qualify for a discount on 2 covers. I hope to get that order placed tomorrow.

I'll get some pics up this weekend. It's supposed to ice & snow here for the next couple days...

Thanks for all the help so far and the much more needed help that I'm going to need.

So you got 2 good skis for under $3000, good deal!!!! I figured there was something wrong with the gauge. It shouldnt run at 75 lbs.

I'm pretty happy; although I wasn't sure if there was going to be a law suit or a fist fight....

Looking forward to trying out the GTI although I know the GTX Limited is way faster.
