Potential purchase; opinions appreciated

I have broadened my search and am looking at some skis that rdfoster brought to my attention. This owner has had them for a while but never ridden them. It's a 12 hr round trip and a $75 investment in a cheap wetsuit to test them. They are still a little more than I wanted to spend & he doesn't seem to be budging, yet. It is completely possible that what I had hoped to spend is less than what I will have to spend based purely on my lack of history with this sport. Please look these over and tell me what you think.

He did say that I could cut my cost by substituting one of his other skis.

I don't need 2-3 seaters; a 2 and a 3 is what I started out looking for anyway.

I welcome your comments & appreciate your time.

both offers seem way overpriced - there are 2000 gtx's with trailer out there for under 2k
location plays into it but a 12 hour drive to overpay seems bad

Thanks Bobby.

I'll keep looking.

yep... what he said.

A good rule to follow is... if you cant take it for a test ride (because of a bad starter or battery)... only pay scrap price for it.

That Polaris will hall A$$. They are very fast. The old PRO 780 was EXTREEMLY light, and won many races. I think the PRO engine put out 130 HP !!! I'm sure the mods can be done to that engine. :D

With a fresh engine... if it also has a trailer... it's well worth the $1k.

The 96 SPi is a very fun hull, but that one only has the 587 engine in it. (60hp) It will probably only have a 40 mph top end. (if the engine is in good shape)

Thanks, Doc. I may see if I can test it.

I really do appreciate the feedback!

No Prob.

If you buy it... I have the service manual for it as a PDF.

I just looked it up. The 3 passenger is the SLT, and it's 780 engine put out 90 HP stock. The only real diff to the PRO engine, is a higher rev limit, and "Factory" triple pipes. (did I mention that it's a 3cyl engine?)

Now... that is a Fuji engine, and the factory parts suport is dwindling on that engine... but places like SBT still have parts.

The only real issue with that engine is the Fuel pump. The single pump design is known to not suply fuel corectly to all the carbs. A second pump, and a re-work of the hoses will cure that. (I may have a pump at my shop ;))

What would a guy expect to replace/repair on this Fuji engine? Can a "normal" guy (automotive; capable of oil changes, tune-ups, basic suspension work, rebuilding older small block Chevy's: tractor; rebuild Ford 9N carb, tune-ups, etc) perform the work necessary to keep skis functional?

Thanks again....

Either of the XP's would be OK. Personally... I would go buy the $500 one, and part it out. You could sell the trailer, and the new MPEM for more than the purchase price.

The old style GTS... that guy is smokein' crack. It's over priced.

The GTi is cool, since you are looking for a 3 seater, but it's a little rough looking. But, if the engine has good compression, and it's not totaly nasty in the bilge/engine compartment... I would see if they would take a few bux less.

The GTx is a 2 seater. Looks good, but it's a little overpriced for winter time. Early spring... it's worth $2500 as long as it doesn't need any work.

Back to the Polaris... yes... they are easy to take care of. It will be the same maintenance as any of your other seadoo's. (flush, wash, make sure there is oil in it, etc.) If you buy it... there is nothing to be scared of. Since the engine is new... it should last for the next 10 years. Fuji heavy industries is a well known engine manufacture in Japan.

Thanks, RF... I'll keep posting for input as long as y'all keep answering...

Very glad I joined this forum. You guys are a GREAT help!

The Hx is a one person ski, and it's not easy to stop on. It was built to be a buoy racer... and it's not much fun as a regular ski. I'm not bashing it... just saying. Every year, I see people buy them because they are in good shape, and cheap... but then they ride it a few times, and sell it because it's too much work to ride. Personally... if you want to have a workout while riding... but a stand up ski. (They are fun in the surf :hurray:)

As far as the other 2... I'm kind of neutral. They are both OK for the price. (if they are in good condition) Kawi's are good, but never "Great"... if that makes sense. The 750 Polaris is also good. That's the 2 seat hull that the Pro used, but the 750 engine was 85hp as I recall, but as the add says... it's a 50 mph ski.

That GTi is nice. $1500 isn't too bad for it, since it's a 2000.

That one has a 720 engine in it... so it's not going to be a rocket... but it will be fun, and it holds 3 people. It should run right around 50 MPH if the engine is in good shape. 135 PSI... I would just open it up, and replace the rings. But it should run fine for a while.
