So I'm currently planning the trip for my wife and I and a buddy for sometime in the next two months.

There's a ton of marinas along the Lake Erie coastline so I don't believe gas will be an issue. The check point is where we'll stop and have lunch, Check the skis over and meet up with the truck who will running parallel to us the whole way. This way if we have any problems help is close or even if we dont feel like making the trip back or theres bad weather two days later we can just load up and go home.

Instead of keeping the skis at the marina we may just beach them in front of the cabin, But that's up in the air.

What do you guys think?

looks like a good run, you can do it in 3-4 hrs probably, i dont know how rough the water is though, you figured 67 miles, just do it on a good forecast, -- cause 2 xp's, the gtx will cruise like a cadilac though -- take pics and show us

I'm really curious as to how many people here have gone long distances on the X4 hull and what their experiences were like. I know on the X4 your the shock absorber but that's not to say that you couldn't get into a comfortable position and just ride.

Seems that everywhere I look people are saying the X4 is bad for trips, But I cant find any people who have actually documented doing it.

Hi Mr. strange, I ride and have ridden the X4 hull a lot. I have to admit that you are vulnerable to the conditions. The pic in my avatar is during a 35 mile loop. We had half a tank left and could have kept on going without any discomfort had we needed to.
I am only 5-6 miles from Destin "as a crow flies". I can easily cross the calm bay in the morning, jump a few waves in the Gulf and come back if I catch a calm time. I have beat myself up bad trying to do this in choppy waves! I had a friend over there waiting for me last year so I pushed and pushed. I had to stop and rest several times, I was only about half way across. I finally called it off thinking that even when I made it I would have to repeat the punishment for the return bay crossing.
Your ride plan accounts for you to bail if you need to. I am just confirming that a fun ride can sure become hard work(and/or scary) in the wrong conditions.

Hey Matt! Thanks for chiming in man! So the real problem is how small the hull is, Correct? Of course any long distance ride is weather condition dependent. Storms, Wind, Air temp and water temp all play a factor in your experience on a long ride. Wind is the most common factor that can wreck your ride because wind = waves, But hypothermia is also another concern up here in the north even on a hot day.

I want to think of everything so we can make the trip successfully, I have my backup just in case but I want to make the run both ways, 143 miles round trip :)

I play in Sandusky Bay all the time and have taken that short trip to Cedar Point when the waves turned ugly. Depending on the wind you can have flat water one minute and jumping 3ft-5ft+ waves the next. Now if your near home then thats fun until you get beat up and head into shore. Have several back up or exit points plotted along the way just in case. Also if you are using a cell phone as your line to help, look into getting a handheld marine radio. There are some spots in the water where your cell doesnt work and that wouldnt be good.

Forgot to mention if your going to tie up in the Cedar Point Marina it does cost but keep your ticket and plan a meal at one of the resteraunts like Famous Daves and they take the cost of docking off your bill.

Nice! Thanks a lot bmocken! Yea we were actually planning on eating at daves, I love their brisket. I am also working on more exit points, I think were going to do one in port clinton instead of crossing the bay like that.

I have a 98 GSX and it does good on the Bay. Post how it turned out.
