Hi, I'm totally new to jet drive but very familiar with outboards and been around small boats my whole life. Looking at buying a 2003 Sportster 4-tec 155 that looks basically mint and has the wake tower. I may not be able to water test this boat though...
I understand that you can run these without water for a few minutes to hear the engine, and can visually inspect it pretty well including the impeller/ wear ring from underneath in the trailer.
I'd be listening to the engine and making sure the impeller wasn't chipped or bent (same way I'd look at a prop basically) and that the wear ring wasn't all scuffed to heck and the nothing wobbled when I try to wobble it (if I can get my hand on it).
The guy says low hours and it certainly appears that way in pictures.
If I can't water test this boat, is there anything else specifically I should look at? Obviously clean engine bay, no leaks, etc.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers!
