Just out of curiousity, do you leave your trailer light wiring plugged in when you are loading/unloading a boat or unplug it before going near the water?

I am asking as I usually leave mine plugged in as it has yet to touch the water (I tow with a lifted F-150) but some have suggested to unplug it anyways.

I would always unplug the trailer lights...1) lights are hot and will blow when hitting cold water 2) Lights will corrode quickly because of electric current passing through the wire. I am a Draw-Tite Hitch Dealer for 25 years now.

i always unplug mine when the trailer gets to the lake. yes water will still get inside the lights but at least electricity won't be going through them.

I have to remember to start unplugging it. Owner's Manual for my truck states that you should unplug them also.

Never have unplugged, never had any problems, don't think I'll will unplug them. I could see leaving and getting pulled over for no trailer lights. And I don't need that! I am going to upgrade to leds soon, so I dont see leaving them plugged in to be a big deal.

yup same here, except mine have been giving me problems from first day. positioning markers sometimes work sometimes dont. so I have been looking around at some leds to upgrade. will take the whole wiring out to find out where the short is.

The trailer lights I installed claim to be "submersible lights." I never unplug mine and haven't had any problems. I would do whatever KustomKarl said to do though, as I will, from now on. Good post.

I always unplug. Just have to remember to plug it back in after leaving the ramp.
